Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kazandu Small scores goal despite Cougars' 4-1 CUNYAC loss to Baruch

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team played its first CUNYAC contest of the 2022 season on Wednesday evening, falling to the Baruch College Bearcats by a score of 4-1. The match took place at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars fell to 0-8 on the year (0-1 in conference play), while Baruch improved to to 3-5 (1-0 CUNYAC).

Baruch College struck early in this one, as Arman Celebi found the back of the net, taking advantage of a beautiful lead pass by Jaedon Seneca to give the Bearcats the early 1-0 advantage just 5:39 into the match. Jemali Zarnadze scored just before halftime (43:09, assisted by Frank Shkreli) to give Baruch a 2-0 edge.

In the second session, at 56:31, the Bearcats catapulted to a commanding 3-0 lead when Uthman Aboulwafa found paydirt (from Spencer Garnets and Kosi Mbadiwe). Medgar Evers would get on the board at exactly 67:00 when Kazandu Small netted a goal, blasting home a shot off a pass by Hamou Soumare cut the Cougars deficit to 3-1.

Just two minutes and 55 seconds later, Baruch's Zyde Nawabi would answer Medgar's goal with a score of his own. Wessam Farag registered an assist on the goal, and the Bearcats led 4-1. That would be the final goal scored by either side on the evening.

Baruch's Jon Legasa, making his season debut in net, picked up the victory, stopping six shots while allowing just the one goal. His counterpart, Medgar Evers netminder Louis Caiola, registered nine saves despite yielding the four goals.

The Bearcats recorded 24 shots on the evening, twice as many as the Cougars, who had 12.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday, October 1st, as the Cougars will take on Lehman College at Old Boys High School Field in a CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
