Cougars drop pair of non-conference matches on Saturday

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team opened up its season on Saturday afternoon, traveling to the Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, NY to take on Brooklyn College and Sarah Lawrence College in a tri-match. The Cougars dropped both matches in straight sets, falling to the Bulldogs in non-conference action (8-25, 6-25, 13-25), and losing to the home Gryphons (3-25, 9-25, 10-25).

In the Cougars' defeat to Brooklyn College, Medgar Evers was paced by returner Cristina Carnegie and newcomer Raine Williams. The two aforementioned players tied for the team-high of three kills. Carnegie also added four digs and a pair of service aces, while Williams contributed two digs.

Brooklyn College was led by Kayla Steele, as she notched a match-high seven kills, hitting .417 in the process. Aleah Rafat put forth a balanced performance, registering four kills, five digs, and three service aces, and Tessa Winkelman added four kills. Amra Mulic posted match-highs of 13 assists and 12 service aces, and Emma Steele notched a match-high seven digs.

In Medgar's loss to the Gryphons, the Cougars were led by Quiara Brye Bey, as she recorded a team-high three kills, while tying for the team-high of six digs. Carnegie contributed team-highs of four service aces and three assists, while also adding three digs.

Sarah Lawrence was led by Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, as she led all players with six kills. Raegan Lacombe added five kills and four digs, and Maddy Heavens had a team-high seven digs and eight service aces. Finally, it was Jane Joncha amassing a match-high 14 assists.

The Cougars will now have four days off before turning to the court on Thursday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Jamaica, Queens to take on the York College Cardinals in a non-conference match. Start-time at the York College Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:30pm.
