Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars undone by Gryphons' scoring barrage in second stanza

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team was defeated by non-conference opponent Sarah Lawrence on Wednesday evening, falling to the Gryphons at Fleming Field in Yonkers, NY by a score of 5-0. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 0-2 on the 2022 campaign, while Sarah Lawrence improved to 2-1.

The teams combined for 14 shots in the opening session (eight for the Gryphons, six for the Cougars), but neither squad was able to find the back of the net. Sarah Lawrence had a golden opportunity to light the scoreboard in the first half, but Nicholas Fajardo's 37th-minute shot hit the left post, keeping the game scoreless. The teams entered the break even at zero.

In the second stanza, the Gryphons used a scoring barrage to take control of the contest and eventually grab a victory.

Sarah Lawrence's Morris Monaco Collins got the scoring underway at 46:49, collecting a free kick from teammate Leon Bronshvag before tapping the ball home to make it 1-0 Gryphons. 10:42 later, Sarah Lawrence increased its lead to a two goals when Fajardo blasted a penalty kick into the bottom right corner of the net. The Gryphons struck again 4:15 later as Fajardo headed a ball to Collins, who blasted home a 25-foot shot. Kaeden Potts (from Aiden Roney at 82:12) and Roney (from bronshvag at 86:08) accounted for Sarah Lawrence's other two goals on the evening.

Gryphons netminder Kian Silva registered a shutout, stopping all seven of the shots he faced. Sarah Lawrence's defense as a whole was stellar, allowing just nine Medgar Evers shots for the evening.

The Cougars will look to solidify their first victory of the 2022 season on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will play its home opener against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. The contest will be played at Kingsborough Community College, with a start-time of 5:30pm.
