Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars run out of gas in fourth quarter, lose to Beavers 60-47 in crucial CUNYAC clash

In a clash of two teams looking to solidify their first CUNYAC victory, the Beavers of the City College of New York pulled away in the fourth quarter, defeating the Cougars of Medgar Evers by a score of 60-47. The game was played at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in upper Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars dropped their sixth straight, dipping to 2-10 on the season (0-4 CUNYAC). The Beavers, who came in losers of eight straight and averaging just 30 points per game during that span, improved to 3-11 (1-3 CUNYAC).

Sheily Quezada and Mariame Gueye led the way for the Cougars again. Quezada posted yet another double-double, tying for the team-high of 16 points, while registering game-bests of 17 rebounds and eight swatted shots. Gueye nailed seven of her 15 attempts from the floor, tying Quezada for the team-high of 16 points. She also snatched seven boards, tallied three assists, and swiped two steals. Finally, it was point guard Jennifer Metra adding 11 points, five boards, a team-high four assists, and two steals.

Leading the way for the Beavers was Anna Vikatos, as she dominated, convering on 12 of her 21 shot attempts, including four buckets from downtown, to finish with a game-high of 30 points. She also grabbed five rebounds, registered three assists, tallied a team-high two blocks, and recorded two steals. Kasia Morrison narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 13 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and posting game-highs of seven steals and five assists, and it was Monae Laing notching a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

In what was a tightly-contested first quarter, neither squad led by more than three points, and the Cougars and Beavers exchanged the lead five times, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming in the closing seconds of the quarter when Vitakos nailed a three-pointer with nine ticks left. After one period, CCNY held a 13-12 edge.

Medgar Evers began the second quarter by scoring seven consecutive points, thanks to a converted jumper and a layup by Quezada, and a made trifecta by Metra. That run put the Cougars ahead 19-13, which turned out to be Medgar E    vers' biggest advantage of the evening. CCNY responded with an 11-0 run over the ensuing 3:02 to catapult ahead by a score of 24-19. That run was highlighted by the stellar play of Vikatos, who netted seven points during the spurt. The Cougars kept things close, though, closing out the half with back-to-back hoops by Quezada and Nana Samake. At the half, the Beavers held a slim 24-23 advantage.

Medgar Evers regained the lead in the opening 51 seconds of the third quarter thanks to a hoop by Quezada. 1:09 later, CCNY's Laing completed a three-point play, making the bucket and sinking the freebee to give the Beavers a 27-25 edge. The Beavers would go on to lead by five twice in the period (30-25 and 32-37), but the Cougars kept things tight, tying the game twice, before CCNY's Morrison hit a layup with 13 seconds left to give the Beavers a 38-36 lead. That would be the score as the crucial conference clash headed to the fourth quarter.

In the final period, with the Cougars trailing 40-36 and just under nine minutes remaining, Gueye would connect on a jumper to pull her team to within a bucket. Following that, it would be all CCNY, as the Beavers would go on a 14-0 run over the next 6:01 of action to grab a 54-38 advantage. The Beavers would later lead by as many as 17, before advancing for a 13-point win.

The Cougars lost the game despite being the more efficient club shooting the basketball. Medgar Evers went 21-for-52, earning a conversion rate of 40.4 percent, while CCNY hit on just 35.2 percent of its shots (25-71). Medgar Evers held a slight 40-38 edge on the glass, while also swatting eight shots compared to three for the hosts. Turnovers came back to bite the Cougars, as Medgar Evers committed 31 miscues compared to 18 for CCNY, and the Beavers held a 19-8 edge in the steals column.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Baruch College to battle the Bearcats in another CUNYAC tilt. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 12:00pm.
