Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars drop crucial CUNYAC game to Bloodhounds, 91-69; Jacob Green registers team-high 19 points in loss

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game last night at the Cougars Cave, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 91-69. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 4-13 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-6 CUNYAC), while the Bloodhounds improved to 4-13 (3-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, sharpshooter Jacob Green connected on five shots from long range, and seven of his 14 attempts overall, to finish with a team-high 19 points. He also added seven assists and four rebounds. Joshua Jean Pierre scored 18 points while snatching nine rebounds and contributing a pair of steals, and Mousa Sinera posted  double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds (Sinera is now just six rebounds shy of 900 for his playing career). Finally, it was Andre Evans Jr. finishing with 11 points, a game-high eight assists, and game-highs of eight assists and three steals.

For the Bloodhounds, standout Garrison Watkins led all scorers with 25 points (10-13 FG). He also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds while registering five dimes as well. Dan Kenny also posted a double-double for the visitors, netting 17 points while grabbing 13 boards and swatting a pair of shots. Isaac Holmes and Corey Jones Jr. each finished with 12 points. Holmes distributed seven assists while Jones Jr. collected six rebounds. Jayson Delgado netted 11 points on 4 of 10 shooting from the field. Jordan Evelyn and Adrian Kopec netted six points apiece, with Evelyn tying for the game-high of eight assists.

In what was a very competitive opening eight minutes of basketball, the teams exchanged the lead six times, with the final exchange coming courtesy of a converted layup by Watkins to put John Jay ahead by a score of 18-17. That kick-started a 14-0 run by the visitors, as the Bloodhounds snatched a commanding 30-17 edge with 6:39 remaining in the opening half.

After a Sinera jumper momentarily halted John Jay's run, the Bloodhounds responded quickly with another 8-0 spurt to grab a 38-19 advantage. John Jay would lead by as many as 22 in the half, before heading into the locker room up 19 (52-33).

There were only two points scored in the opening 2:45 of the second half, courtesy of John Jay. Later, the Bloodhounds looked poised to run away with the game, holding a 61-39 lead with 14:34 left, but a 14-5 run by Medgar Evers over a span of 5:30 got the Cougars to within 13 at 66-53.

Later, the Bloodhounds started to pull away, courtesy of a 19-7 run that saw the lead grow to 25, 85-60, following Jones Jr. completing the traditional three-point from the line at the 3:51 mark. That aforementioned 25 point edge was John Jay's biggest lead, and the Bloodhounds would advance to win the pivotal CUNYAC clash by 22 (91-69).

The Bloodhounds were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, both from the field, and at the free throw line. John Jay shot a blistering 61.3 percent in the first half, and 51.5 percent for the game (34-66). The visitors also converted on 88.9 percent of their attempts from the line (16-18). The Cougars shot 38.5 percent from the floor (28-73), and just 35.7 percent from the stripe (5-14). John Jay held a slim 42-39 edge on the glass, while also dishing 28 helpers to Medgar Evers' 20. The Cougars held a 5-4 edge in swatted shots, and the teams registered eight steals apiece. Both teams took care of the basketball well, with the Cougars committing just 15 turnovers, and John Jay 13.

Medgar Evers will look to solidify its first CUNYAC victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars travel to the Bronx to take on Lehman College. Start time at the APEX Center is scheduled for 3:00pm.
