Lehman pulls away in second half, defeats Cougars, 86-70 in CUNYAC contest

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 86-70. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 4-14 on the 2022-2023 season (0-7 CUNYAC), while the Lightning improved to 12-6 (6-1 CUNYAC).

Andre Evans Jr. led Medgar Evers' charge in this one, as he scored a team-high 17 points while registering a game-high four steals. He also snatched three rebounds, as well. Sophomore Dante Simmons netted 12 points while grabbing seven boards and swiping three steals, and sharpshooter Jacob Green contributed nine points. Newcomer Michael Perez also scored nine points while grabbing six rebounds, and veterans Dimitri Weeks and Joshua Jean Pierre netted seven points apiece.

For Lehman, Juan Fernandez scored a game-high 19 points while also snatching four rebounds and adding three assists, and Lasana Camara contributed 18 points and four caroms. Mo Idrissou and Isaiah Geathers both posted double-doubles, with Idrissou finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Geathers registering 11 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.

In what was a very competitive first half, neither team took more than a four point lead in the opening 8:51. Then, with Lehman ahead 20-17, the Lightning put together a 15-7 run to take its biggest lead of the game, an 11-point edge (35-24), with 4:59 to go in the session. During that spurt, Idrissou connected on three trifectas.

Medgar Evers kept things close, finishing the half by outscoring the hosts 12-7, slicing Lehman's advantage to six (42-36) as the teams headed to the locker room at halftime. Perez scored five points during that run for the visitors, with Simmons adding four.

Lehman College put some considerable distance between itself and Medgar Evers in the early stages of the second half, as the Lightning started the period with a 15-1 run over a span of 4:44. That extended Lehman's lead to 20, 57-37. Later, with 7:57 remaining, the Cougars were able to close the gap to 12 points (67-55), but Lehman would never let its lead dip below that, and the Lightning went on to win the contest by 16.

The Lightning connected on 35 of its 70 attempts from the floor for the afternoon (50 percent), while Medgar Evers converted on 37.7 percent of its shots (26-69). The CUNYAC foes were deadlocked in the rebounding column, snatching 43 apiece, and the Cougars held a whopping 11-2 edge in steals. Lehman did hold an eye-opening 23-6 edge in the assists category, while also narrowly winning the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues compared to 16 for the visitors.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will stay on Beford Avenue to battle Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time at the West Quad Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:15pm.
