Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars lean on Dimitri Weeks, Mousa Sinera, and Stellar Defense to shut down Bulldogs, 65-56, in CUNYAC action

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team picked up a much-needed victory on Tuesday evening, defeating the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College by a score of 65-56 in CUNYAC action. The contest took place at the West Quad Gymnasium on the campus of Brooklyn College. With the victory, Medgar Evers halted a nine-game skid in conference contests dating back to last season, and improved to an overall mark of 5-14 (1-7 CUNYAC). The Bulldogs dipped to 3-15 (1-7 CUNYAC) with the loss.

Pacing the Cougars in their victory was senior Dimitri Weeks, as he tied for the game-high of 17 points, knocking down three trifectas and all six of his free throw attempts. Additionally, he dished four assists and collected three boards. Mousa Sinera put forth a very strong effort, netting 10 points and pulling down a whopping 21 rebounds (eight on the offensive glass), and freshman Richar Frias narrowly missed a double-double, as he scored nine points while snatching 12 boards. Sharpshooter Jacob Green connected on three shots from long range, as he finished with nine points and three boards, and sophomore Andre Evans Jr. contributed seven points, a team-high five assists, four rebounds, and two steals.

For the Bulldogs, two players scored 17 points, with nobody else scoring more than six. David McFadden's netted 17 points while also grabbing nine rebounds and registering a game-high six assists, and Serge Thraysbule also scored 17 while grabbing five boards, dropping five dimes, and swiping a game-high four steals.

In the early stages of the contest, it appeared as though it may be another long night for the Cougars, as Brooklyn dashed to a 7-0 advantage 3:43 into the clash between the Bedford Avenue foes. The Bulldogs later led 15-7 with 12:20 left in the first half, when Medgar Evers put together a 14-0 run to snatch a 21-15 edge. Frias scored seven of those aforementioned 14 points to lead the Cougars charge during that run.

Later in the half, Medgar Evers built an eight-point edge, going up 28-20 following a pair of converted Weeks freebees. Brooklyn then closed the half strong, outscoring the visitors 12-2 over the final 4:35 of the session to snatch a 32-30 edge as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers, trailing 36-35 with 15:15 left in the game, took the lead for good on a Sinera layup. That put the Cougars ahead 37-36. From that juncture of the game forward, Medgar's defense was stellar, as the Cougars allowed just eight Brooklyn field goals the rest of the way. The Cougars led by as many as 11 points twice (58-47 and 60-49) before holding on for an impressive nine-point victory.

In a game where defense dominated the night, neither squad lit up the shooting percentage column. Medgar Evers nailed just 35.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-68), while Brooklyn College converted on 23 of 69 attempts (33.3 percent). Medgar Evers drilled nine of 13 attempts from the charity stripe (69.2 percent), while the Bulldogs missed five freebees (5-10, 50 percent). The Cougars held a 49-44 edge on the glass, while also swiping seven steals to five for Brooklyn. The two squads took care of the basketball well, each committing just 13 turnovers apiece.

Medgar Evers will look to make it two consecutive victory on Friday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the Beavers of the City College of New York to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for that crucial showdown is scheduled for 8:00pm.
