Andre Evans Jr. leads all scorers with 17 points in Medgar Evers' 85-61 loss to CCNY

Box Score The Medgar Evers men's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Friday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 85-61. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers fell to 5-15 overall (1-8 CUNYAC), while the Beavers improved to 13-7 overall (8-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, sophomore standout Andre Evans Jr. continued his recent surge, leading all scorers with 17 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, tied for the team-high of five assists, and swiped a pair of steals. Senior Mousa Sinera posted a double-double, scoring 14 points while snatching a game-high 13 rebounds. He also dropped five dimes while adding two steals. Freshman Richar Frias scored seven points, collected five boards, swatted two shots, dished two assists, and registered two steals, and Joshua Jean Pierre and Dimitri Weeks scored six points apiece.

In the victory for the Beavers, 11 different players scored points, including Yassine Sakhi, as he connected on five of his eight attempts from the floor, and all three of his freebees, to finish with a team-high 13 points. Daniel Piszczatowski added 12 points, a game-high four steals, three rebounds, and three assists, and Amir Assani netted 10 points, snatched seven boards, dished four assists, and swiped three steals. Ricardo Dixon, Justin Steed, and Jordan Williams scored nine points apiece, and Dashaun Galloway had an incredibly versatile game, scoring six points, registering a game-high 10 assists, and snatching a team-best nine boards.

CCNY wasted no time taking control of the CUNYAC clash, racing to a 17-4 lead in the opening 7:04 of action. The Cougars were able to get within single digits (20-11) with 11 minutes remaining in the half, but the Beavers would outscore the hosts 26-9 for the remainder of the session to take a commanding 46-20 into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Medgar Evers came out with increased intensity, slicing the Beavers' advantage to 16 twice (54-38 and 59-43), and eventually getting as close as 15 points down (65-50) with 8:06 remaining on the clock. From that juncture of the game forward, though, Medgar Evers was only able to convert three more field goals, and CCNY's lead never dipped below 15, as the Beavers went on to win the conference contest by 24 (85-61).

Both squads shot over 40 percent, with CCNY mailing 44.6 percent of its attempts from the floor (33-74), and the Cougars converting on 40.4 percent (23-57). The Beavers held a respectable 45-36 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while the Cougars had 30. CCNY also held a 15-9 edge in the steals category, and the CUNYAC squads swatted four shots apiece.

The Cougars are now two games behind John Jay for the sixth and final playoff spot in the upcoming CUNYAC Men's Basketball tournament with five games left. Medgar Evers will look to put themselves in better position to qualify for a potential postseason berth on Tuesday evening, as they welcome the high-scoring Hunter College Hawks to the Cougars Cave. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
