Medgar Evers defeated by John Jay 80-32 in CUNYAC action; Quezada nearly records triple-double in defeat

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team lost a CUNYAC game on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 80-32. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 2-12 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-5 CUNYAC). John Jay improved to 10-7 (4-2 CUNYAC) with the victory.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, freshman standout Sheily Quezada scored a team-high 15 points while posting game-highs of 19 rebounds and eight blocks. She also added four assists. Mariame Gueye scored nine points and snatched seven boards, and Camaya Sealy pulled down 13 rebounds and registered a pair of assists.

The Bloodhounds had four players score in double-figures, led by Kamryn Hammond, who knocked down four trifectas on her way to scoring a game-high 18 points. Gillian Powell registered a double-double, finishing with 13 points and a team-leading 15 rebounds. She also added two assists and two steals. Katie Healy contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, and Bobbi registered 11 points, snatched seven rebounds, swiped seven steals, and added three dimes.

John Jay held a commanding 23-3 edge after the opening period. Medgar Evers tried to keep the CUNYAC contest close, outscoring the Bloodhounds 6-2 to open the second quarter to pull to within 16 (25-9), but John Jay responded with a 21-0 run over a span of 6:35 to stretch its lead to 37, 46-9. The Bloodhounds later sprinted into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 48-11 edge.

John Jay continued to run away from the hosts, outscoring the Cougars 19-7 in the third period to go ahead 67-18 after 30 minutes of action. Medgar Evers did outscore John Jay 14-13 in the fourth quarter, but John Jay's impressive night would culminate in a 48-point victory (80-32).

The Bloodhounds won the game comfortably despite shooting just 35.6 percent from the floor (32-90). On the flip side, Medgar Evers hit on just 21.7 percent of its shots (13-60). John Jay held a 59-50 edge on the glass, while also piling 25 assists to the Cougars' eight. The Bloodhounds held their turnovers in check, committing just 14 while Medgar Evers had 37. The Cougars did lead in the swatted shots column, totaling 10 blocks to the Bloodhounds' three.

Medgar Evers will look to solidify its first CUNYAC victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars travel to the Bronx to take on Lehman College. Start time at the APEX Center is scheduled for 12:00pm.
