Camaya Sealy posts double-double as Cougars fall to Lightning in CUNYAC action

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lehman College Lightning by a score of 68-32. The game was played at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 2-13 on the 2022-2023 campaign, while the Lightning improved to 7-10 on the season (3-4 CUNYAC).

Leading the way for the Cougars was freshman standout Sheily Quezada, as she scored a team-high 16 points while blocking a game-high six shots. She also snatched seven rebounds and tallied four steals. Camaya Sealy posted a double-double with 10 points and a team-hgih 11 rebounds to go along with two steals, and Nana Samake collected nine boards.

Barbara Valentin was sensational for the hosts, as she connected on 10 of her 22 atempts from the floor, and six of her seven freebees, to finish with a game-high 29 points. She also swiped four steals, snatched three boards, and tallied a pair of assists. Brianna Barnes registered a triple-double with 20 points, a game-high 12 assists, 10 rebounds, and seven steals, and Ramatoulaye Diallo netted 13 points, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and recorded seven steals.

Lehman College scored the first 19 points of the game, and led the CUNYAC contest 25-6 after one period. The Lightning held its biggest lead, a 37-12 edge, late in the half, but a modest 5-0 Cougars run sliced the home team's lead to 20 (37-17) as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime. That Medgar Evers run included a bucket from Sealy, and a converted three-pointer by Samake.

The Lightning dominated the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 23-5 to take a commanding 60-22 lead after three. Lehman went up by as many as 42 in the final period, before going on to win the CUNYAC clash by 36.

Lehman connected on 38.2 percent of its shots from the floor (26-68), while Medgar Evers hit on just 30.4 percent of its shots (14-46). The Lightning held a 44-34 edge on the glass, while also tallying 21 assists compared to eight for the hosts. Lehman won the turnover battle, committing just 14 miscues compared to 30 for Medgar Evers. The Cougars did dominate the blocks column, swatting six shots (all courtesy of Quezada), while the Lightning had one.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will stay on Beford Avenue to battle Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time at the West Quad Gymnasium is scheduled for 5:00pm.
