Sheily Quezada and Mariame Gueye account for 16 points apiece in Cougars' loss at Brooklyn

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost a CUNYAC game on Tuesday evening, falling to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College by a score of 74-32. The contest took place at the West Quad Gymnasium on the campus of Brooklyn College. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 2-14 on the season (0-7 CUNYAC). The Bulldogs improved to 11-7 while staying unblemished in conference competition at 8-0.

Only two Cougars scored for Medgar Evers, as standouts Sheily Quezada and Mariame Gueye netted 16 points apiece. Quezada also contributed game-highs of 10 rebounds and four blocked shots, to go along with four steals and three assists. Gueye chipped in with three rebounds and two assists.

For the Bulldogs, Gianna Gotti led the way, as she scored a game-high 20 points to go along with a game-high five steals and three rebounds. Nancy Pham connected on four shots from downtown, finishing with 16 points, four boards, and three assists, and Brianna Gutierrez and Cheyenne Castellano contributed nine points apiece. Gutierrez also added six rebounds three steals, and a pair of assists. 

The Bedford Avenue foes exchanged the lead four times in the opening quarter, with the final change coming via a converted layup by Gotti. That put Brooklyn ahead 6-5. The Bulldogs would outscore the Cougars 8-2 the remainder of the quarter to grab a 14-7 lead after one period. Brooklyn led 37-13 at halftime, and 58-22 after 30 minutes of action. The Bulldogs' 42-point margin of victory was also their biggest lead of the evening.

The hosts won the game easily despite shooting just 35.6 percent from the floor (31-87). The Cougars converted on 31.8 percent of their attempts (14-44). The Bulldogs dominated on the glass, snatching 48 boards to 28 for the visitors, and Brooklyn committed just 14 turnovers while Medgar Evers had 33. The Bulldogs swiped 24 steals while the Cougars earned seven, and Brooklyn piled 23 assists to Medgar's 12. The Cougars did hold a 5-3 edge in the swatted shots column, with four coming courtesy of Quezada.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Friday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the Beavers of the City College of New York to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for that crucial showdown is scheduled for 6:00pm.
