Despite late comeback attempt, Cougars drop CUNYAC clash to Beavers, 50-33

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Friday evening, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 50-33. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dropped its 11th straight, falling to 2-15 (0-8 CUNYAC). CCNY improved to 4-16 (2-7 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, rookie standout Sheily Quezada led the way for the hosts, tying for the team-high of 15 points, while also posting team-highs 17 rebounds and seven steals. Her eight swatted shots were a game-high, and she also contributed four assists. Mariame Gueye also posted a double-double, dropping in 15 points while snatching 10 boards and swiping two steals.

For the Beavers, Monae Laing registered game-highs of 17 points and 18 rebounds, while also adding four steals. Leondra Craig netted 10 points, snatched eight rebounds, and recorded four steals, and Kasia Morrison and Anna Vikatos netted nine and eight points respectively.

CCNY raced out to an early 6-0 advantage just 46 seconds into the game. The Cougars defense would allow just one field goal for the remainder of the quarter, though, outscoring the Beavers 7-3 over the final 9:14 of the period to slice their deficit to two, 9-7, after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, a converted layup by Gueye tied the game, and then, following a converted freebee by CCNY, a bucket by Quezada gave the Cougars there first lead, 11-10. Later, a bucket by Gueye extended Medgar Evers' edge to three, but a made free throw and hoop by Laing tied the game at 13 apiece with just 3:26 remaining in the opening half.

After finishing the first quarter slow, CCNY closed the half strong, outscoring the hosts 9-3 over the final 3:26 of the session to snatch a 22-16 edge as the teams headed to their locker rooms at halftime.

CCNY dominated the third quarter, outscoring Medgar Evers 16-6, and allowing just two field goals for the hosts for the first 9:40 of the quarter. After 30 minutes of action, the Beavers held a commanding 38-22 lead. 

Despite a rough third quarter, the Cougars refused to go down quietly, as Medgar Evers scored nine of the first 11 points of the fourth to pull to within nine, 40-31, with 4:21 left. Gueye scored six points during that aforementioned spurt. on CCNY's ensuing possession, Morrison knocked down a jumper to put the Beavers back up double digits (42-31), and CCNY never looked back, going on to win the CUNYAC clash by 17 (50-33).

Neither squad shot the ball well, as both teams converted on loss than 20 percent of their attempts (CCNY was 16-84 for a conversion rate of 19 percent, Medgar Evers 11-56, for a percentage of 19.6 percent). CCNY held a slight edge on the glass, snatching 59 boards compared to 56 for the hosts, and the Beavers collected 23 steals, while Medgar Evers registered 10. CCNY won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues, while the Cougars had 36, but Medgar Evers did hold a convincing 9-4 edge in the swatted shots category.

The Cougars will return to action this Tuesday evening, as they'll take on the Hawks of Hunter College in another CUNYAC game. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
