Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hunter's versatility too much for Medgar as Hawks secure 79-26 victory in CUNYAC play

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost a CUNYAC game last night, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 79-26. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 2-16 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-9 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 11-10 (6-4 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Mariame Gueye scored a team-high 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, two swatted shots, and a steal. The returning Jennifer Metra contributed six points and four rebounds in 28 minutes of action, and Sheily Quezada added eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

For Hunter, Alexa Charles dominated, as she posted game-highs of 27 points (9-10 FT), 10 seals, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Kimberly Lau nailed seven of her nine attempts from the floor to finish with 16 points. She also snatched seven rebounds, dished five assists, and swiped three steals. Erin Cosio finished with 12 points, seven boards, and two steals, and Katie Burke finalized her evening with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Cougars kept things close in the early stages of the CUNYAC contest, finding themselves down just one point, 10-9, following a converted jumper from Quezada with 3:06 left in the first quarter. It would be all Hunter from there, though. The Hawks finished the first quarter with 11 consecutive points, with nine of those points coming courtesy of Charles. After one quarter, the Hawks led 21-10.

In the second, Hunter held a commanding 37-17 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the half before scoring the final eight points of the period to take a comfortable 45-17 edge into the locker room at halftime. The Hawks outscored Medgar Evers 20-5 in the third, and 14-4 in the fourth, to win the game by 53 (79-26).

Hunter Converted on 38.8 percent of its shots from the floor (31-80), while the Cougars converted on just 10 of 59 attempts (16.9 percent). The Hawks held a commanding 64-36 edge on the glass, while also tallying 24 assists compared to five for the hosts. Hunter swiped 25 steals to Medgar's 15, but the Cougars did win the blocks battle, swatting six shots to the Hawks' five.

The Cougars will next return to the court on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Jamaica, Queens to take on CUNYAC foe York College. Start-time for that crucial conference clash is scheduled for 6:00pm.
