Cardinals dominate final 25 minutes of play, defeat Cougars, 67-28; Quezada finishes with double-double (14 points, 10 boards)

The Cougars' women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Friday evening, falling to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 67-28. The contest took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, Queens. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 2-17 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-10 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to 10-9 (6-5 CUNYAC). 

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, freshman Sheily Quezada posted yet another double-double, as she led all Cougars with 14 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, and two swatted shots. Point guard Jennifer Metra added five points, 10 boards, three assists, and two steals.

Four players scored in double figures for the hosts, included Mac-Dege Dessources, as she posted game-highs of 17 points and 16 rebounds to go along with four steals. Ellma Hodzic contributed 16 points, a game-high seven steals, and four assists, and Kristina Sierra posted a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Finally, it was Alicia Gumbs netting 13 points, dishing four assists, and swiping three steals.

Medgar Evers kept things close for the first quarter and a half. The Cougars trailed by just six (12-6) after 10 minutes of action, and found themselves down only seven (16-9) with 5:44 remaining in the half, but it was all Cardinals from there. York put together a 15-0 run over a span of 4:08 to snatch a commanding 31-9 edge, before going up by as many as 25, 35-10, at the half.

The Cardinals carried the momentum from late in the second quarter into the second half, as York outscored the visitors 18-8 in the third, and 14-10 in the fourth, to account for the 39-point win (67-28).

York converted on 26 of its 70 shot attempts for the evening (37.1 percent), while the Cougars nailed just 25 percent of theirs (12-48). The Cardinals dominated the glass, 44-27, while also dishing 15 assists compared to five for Medgar Evers. York held a solid 24-9 edge in the steals category, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 19, while the Cougars had 37.

Medgar Evers will now have the weekend off before returning to the court on Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the ARC Arena to battle the Baruch College Bearcats in CUNYAC action. Start-time is scheduled for 6:30pm.
