Quezada posts 11th double-double of rookie campaign in Cougars' loss at Baruch

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team dropped the first of two games with Baruch in a three day span, falling to the Bearcats by a score of 68-20 Monday evening. The game took place at the ARC Arena in Lower Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to a mark of 2-18 on the season (0-11 CUNYAC), and Medgar Evers was eliminated from CUNYAC playoff contention. The Bearcats improved to 12-10 (6-5 CUNYAC) with the win.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Sheily Quezada put together yet another double-double, her 11th of the 2022-2023 campaign, as she scored a team-high 16 points, posted game-highs of 14 rebounds and seven blocks, and swiped a team-high six steals. Quezada currently leads the nation in swatted shots with 87.

Pacing Baruch College was Mia Castillo, as she scored a game-high 24 points while leading all players in steals with 10. She also snatched six rebounds, dished four assists, and swatted two shots. Paige Trainor added 16 points while swiping three steals, and Elissa Leung contributed 12 points while registering a game-high six assists. Finally, D'Andre McRae and Allison Altamirano pulled down 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Quezada gave the Cougars their only lead of the game, nailing a jumper 65 seconds in put Medgar Evers a 2-0 edge. Baruch spent the next five minutes scoring 19 straight points to catapult ahead by 17, 19-2. The hosts led 29-5 after the first quarter, and 43-9 at the half.

In the second half, the Bearcats only registered 25 points, but still outscored Medgar Evers in the third and fourth quarters before eventually winning the CUNYAC contest by 48.

The Bearcats connected on 37.5 percent of their shots from the floor (31-82) while holding the Cougars to a 17 percent conversion rate (9-53). Baruch College dominated the glass, grabbing 58 rebounds while the Cougars snatched 38. The Bearcats doubled-up Medgar Evers in steals, swiping 24 while the visitors had 12, and Baruch won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues while the Cougars had 36.

Medgar Evers and Baruch will meet again on Wednesday evening, this time in the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. Start-time for that CUNYAC clash is scheduled for 6:00pm.
