Mariame Gueye, Halle Haughton score 13 points apiece in Cougars' home loss to Baruch

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team suffered a loss to Baruch College on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bearcats in a CUNYAC contest by a score of 84-44. The conference clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 2-19 (0-12 CUNYAC). Baruch completed the two-game sweep of the Cougars, and improved to 13-10 with the win (7-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, junior Mariame Gueye, and newcomer Halle Haughton tied for the team-high of 13 points. Gueye also contributed eight rebounds while blocking two shots. Standout Sheily Quezada, who came into the game leading all players in NCAA Division III in total blocks, swatted five Bearcats shots. She also added 10 rebounds, eight points, three assists, and three steals. Finally, point guard Jennifer Metra scored seven points, posted  team-highs 11 rebounds and four assists, while also swiping a game-high six steals.

For the Bearcats, Elissa Leung scored a game-high 30 points, connecting on 14 of her 22 shot attempts in the process. She also registered five assists, grabbed five rebounds, and swiped three steals. Mia Castillo netted 16 points, dished a game-high 12 assists, collected five rebounds, and recorded a game-high five steals. Paige Traynor scored 15 points while swiping three steals and swatting two shots, and D'Andre McRae scored 12 points, snatched four boards, and added three steals.

Baruch raced out to a 13-3 advantage in the opening 5:23 of the contest, but the Cougars kept things close in the opening period, going on a 7-0 run to slice their deficit to three (13-10) with 2:26 remaining in the first quarter. Metra netted three points, and Gueye and Quezada scoed two apiece during that aforementioned spurt. In the latter stages of the period, with the Bearcats owning a 16-12 edge, Leung nailed a three point basket to beat the buzzer, giving the visitors a seven point advantage (19-12) after 10 minutes of action.

Baruch dominated the second quarter, scoring 19 of the period's first 21 points to take a commanding 38-14 edge with 4:57 to go in the half. the Bearcats outscored the Cougars 30-6 in the quarter, and took a 49-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bearcats opened the period with seven straight points, courtesy of Leung (four points) and McRae (three points). Baruch held a 38 point lead (56-18), and went up by as many as 42 before taking a 69-29 edge into the final quarter. The teams scored 15 points apiece in the fourth, as the Bearcats went on to win the CUNYAC contest by 40.

Baruch converted on 41.2 percent of its attempts from the floor (35-85), while Medgar Evers hit on just 26.8 percent of its shots (15-56). The Bearcats domianted on the glass (snatching 59 rebounds to 42 for the hosts), while also dishing a whopping 29 assists compared to the Cougars' 11. The visitors also won the turnover battle, committing only 17 for the evening, while Medgar Evers totalled 32.

Medgar Evers will play its final road game of the 2022-2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Midtown, Manhattan to take on the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
