Cougars register just 12 second-half points in CUNYAC loss at John Jay

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team played its final road game of the 2022-2023 campaign, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in CUNYAC action by a score of 105-34. The game took place at the Doghouse in Midtown Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 2-20 overall (0-13 CUNYAC), while John Jay improved to 16-8 (10-3 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jennifer Metra paced Medgar Evers with team-highs of nine points, three assists, and three steals. She also tied for the team-high of six rebounds. Halle Haughton and Mariame Gueye netted seven points apiece, and rookie sensation Sheily Quezada finalized her afternoon with six points, six boards, and a game-high three swatted shots. 

Six players scored in double figures for the balanced Bloodhounds, including Chayanne Kelly, as she posted a monstrous triple-double with game-highs of 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists. Kamryn Hammond netted 17 points while snatching seven rebounds, and Victoria Brown finalized her afternoon with 16 points, four assists, three boards, and three steals. Senior Katie Healy netted 14 points, dished seven assists, collected six boards, and swiped six steals, and Jordyn Ruiz posted a double-double with 13 points, 10 steals, three assists, and two rebounds. Finally, it was Bobbi Green adding 10 points and five rebounds.

The Bloodhounds dominated the game from start to finish, scoring the first 17 points of the contest over the opening 4:45. John Jay later led 22-5 with 41 seconds remaining in the first period, but Bryanna Merger connected on a trifecta to make it 22-8 in favor of the hosts. The Bloodhounds reclaimed their 17 point edge 36 seconds later when Hammond drilled a triple, giving John Jay a 25-8 edge after one quarter.

Medgar Evers scored the first five points of the second quarter, courtesy of a converted layup by Merger, and a drained trifecta by Haughton. That made it 25-13 John Jay with 8:42 left in the half. The Bloodhounds would build their lead back to 19 (40-21) with 3:46 left in the session, before finishing the half on a 14-1 spurt to take a commanding 54-22 edge into the locker room at halftime.

John Jay completely overwhelmed Medgar Evers in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 28-4 in the third quarter, and 23-8 in the final period, to account for the 69-point CUNYAC victory.

The Bloodhounds converted on 54.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (47-86), while the Cougars hit on just 26 percent of their shots from the floor (13-50). John Jay held a staggering 55-23 edge on the glass, while also collecting 25 steals compared to six for the visitors. The Bloodhounds won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 36.

The Cougars will close out their 2022-2023 campaign on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome Lehman College to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC contest. Start-time for the conference clash is scheduled for 6:00pm.
