Cougars drop CUNYAC contest at Hunter College; Sheily Quezada shines despite defeat

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team started calendar year 2023 with a defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 89-45. The contest was played at the Hunter Sportsplex in Midtown, Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 2-8 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 7-6 (2-0 CUNYAC).

Sheily Quezada played well for Medgar Evers despite the Cougars' loss, as the freshman continued her stellar rookie campaign by scoring a team-high 20 points. She also snatched seven rebounds, swatted a game-high six shots, and registered a team-high four steals. Point guard Jennifer Metra connected on six of her 14 attempts from the floor, finishing with 15 points, a team-high nine boards, and two dimes, and Mariame Gueye recorded 10 points while pulling down five rebounds and blocking three Hawk shot attempts.

For Hunter College, Alexa Charles put together a masterful performance, knocking down 10 of her 17 attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 23 points. She also led all players with 11 rebounds, tied for the game-high of five steals, and piled four dimes. Kimberly Lau, Katie Burke, and Erin Cosio all contributed 16 points apiece, with Lau adding six helpers and five steals, and Burke notching four steals and adding three assists.

The Hawks established the tempo of the game early, racing out to an 8-0 advantage on the back of Charles, who scored all eight of the points during that ferocious offensive spurt. After a jumper by Quezada got Medgar Evers on the board 1:55 into the quarter, Burke nailed a trifecta, and Lau converted on consecutive baskets to put Hunter up 14-2. The Cougars were able to slice their deficit to as many as seven points four different times in the period, before the Hawks closed the quarter with nine straight points to snatch a 29-13 edge after one.

In the second quarter, Hunter allowed just four Medgar Evers field goals and gradually built its lead, taking a commanding 25-point advantage (49-24) into the locker room at halftime.

After more than doubling Medgar Evers' output in half number one, Hunter College continued to apply pressure, nearly doing the same thing in the second half. The Hawks outscored the Cougars 40-21 over the final two periods to account for the 44-point margin of victory.

Hunter College knocked down 43 percent of its attempts from the floor (37-86) while holding Medgar Evers to just a 34 percent conversion rate (18-53). The Hawks dominated the glass, snatching 54 rebounds to Medgar Evers' 33, and Hunter also won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues, while the Cougars had 36. The Hawks' defensive tenacity was also on display, as the hosts compiled 23 steals as a team compared to eight for the visitors.

Medgar Evers will return to the court this Friday evening, as the Cougars will host the Bulldogs in a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
