Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars outlasted by Cardinals in five sets despite Lloyd's big night

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team came up just a tad short of claiming its first victory of 2023, Tuesday falling to York College in non-conference action by scores of 14-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-23, and 12-15. The match took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, Queens. With the defeat, Medgar dipped to 0-13 on the season, while the Cardinals improved to 2-7.

For the Cougars, veteran Britonya Lloyd put forth the best effort of her Cougars career, notching a match-high 13 kills while also leading her squad with a whopping 30 digs. Jennifer Metra had a nice all-around performance with seven kills and 16 digs, and Quiara Brye Bey finished with a team-high 11 assists, and a match-best six service aces. Finally, it was Raine Williams and Aliyah Chapman finalizing their evenings with 16 digs apiece.

The Cardinals were paced by Shamonie Miller and Nadaysia Nivar, as they finished with nine kills and five service aces apiece. Miller's 31 digs were also a match-high, and Nivar piled 22 digs. Setter Samantha Panameno's 25 assists were by far a match-high, and Alicia Gumbs finished her evening with eight kills and 16 digs.

The early stages of the match sent the tone for the type of evening it would be, as the Cougars and Cardinals were tied at nine apiece through 18 points. York College then pulled away, putting together a 10-1 spurt to catapult ahead by a count of 19-10. Later, up 24-14, a service ace by Tyler Dazey put a cap on the first set victory for the hosts.

In the second set, Medgar Evers held a 13-10 edge before going on a 7-1 run to snatch a commanding 20-11 lead. That spurt was highlighted by a pair of service aces by Brye Bey. Later, a Williams ace put the Cougars on the doorstep of their first set win of the 2023 campaign, but the Cardinals rattled off six straight points to grab a 25-24 edge. Showing resiliency, Medgar scored the next three points to win the set, taking advantage of a pair of attack errors by York before finishing off the set with a Lloyd kill. After two sets, the match was tied at one set apiece.

Medgar Evers held a slim 13-11 lead in the third before a 6-1 York run put the Cardinals ahead 17-14. Later, with the hosts holding on to a 17-16 lead, York finished off the set with an 8-4 run to win it, 25-20.

Down 15-12 in the fourth, the Cougars went on a ferocious 9-1 run to jump ahead 21-17. That run featured a pair of kills by Adacia Scotland, a kill by Metra, and two service aces by Brye Bey. Later, leading 23-20, the Cougars lost the ensuing three points, as York battled back to tie the set at 23-all. Medgar Evers responded in a big way, though, with consecutive kills by Lloyd, as the Cougars won the fourth, 25-23.

In the fifth set, the Cougars trailed 10-5, 12-8, and 14-9, but still refused to concede, scoring three consecutive points to pull to within two points at 14-12. A service error by Mariame Gueye ended the match, giving York College the win in the five-set classic.

Neither team hit for a high percentage in the non-conference affair, as York hit at a rate of .029 while Medgar Evers hit in the negative -.030. The Cardinals held edges in most categories, including kills (38-27), aces (23-10), assists (31-23), and digs (103-101). The teams registered three blocks apiece.

Medgar Evers will now have three days off before returning to the court to take on SUNY-Maritime in a non-conference match. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
