Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer defeated by John Jay 4-0, as Bloodhounds pull away in second half

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team suffered a shutout defeat on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the John Jay College Bloodhounds by a score of 4-0. The CUNYAC clash took place on the No. 74 field at Randall's Island. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 1-9-2 on the season (0-3-1 CUNYAC), while John Jay improved to 5-6-1 (3-1-1 CUNYAC).

In what was a low scoring first half, John Jay's Brayan Alvarez recorded the lone goal of the opening session, striking from just outside the box on the left side in the 18th minute. The Bloodhounds held a commanding 17-2 edge in the shots category, but Cougars netminder Rene Sanchez kept the Cougars in the match, collecting five saves. After 45 minutes of action, John Jay led 1-0.

Less than nine minutes into the second half, the Bloodhounds added to their lead when Justin Gharbin was able to twist a shot into the top corner of the net from about 20 yards out to make it 2-0. Later, in the 63rd minute, Alvarez scored his second goal of the match, capitalizing on Daniel Rosa's pass into the box before drilling the ball home to catapult the Bloodhounds to a 3-0 edge.

The fourth and final goal of the afternoon came courtesy of offensive stud Kevin Luciano. Luciano collected the ball and used some nifty footwork before slashing the ball home. That made it 4-0 John Jay, a score that held true, as the Bloodhounds advanced for the victory.

John Jay held a 32-9 edge in the shots category, including 16 shots on net compared to four for Medgar Evers. The Bloodhounds also held a 12-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Bloodhounds keeper Tyler Solis earned the victory, logging 75:08 of shutout action and making three stops. Kelvin De La Cruz played the final 14:52, not allowing a goal while making one save. On the Medgar Evers side, Sanchez hung tough despite yielding the four goals, as he piled 12 saves.

The Cougars will return home on Friday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will take on Hunter College at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
