Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

After competitive first half, Hawks pull away from Cougars to stay undefeated in CUNY play

Despite a strong opening half, the Medgar Evers men's soccer team ran out of gas in the final 45 minutes, falling to Hunter College by a score of 5-0 in CUNYAC action Friday afternoon. The match took place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 1-10-2 (0-4-1 CUNYAC), while Hunter improved to 5-5-1, staying unblemished in conference action in the process (4-0-1).

Medgar Evers had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 23rd minute, as Bernado Guerrier headed a ball towards the goal that was snatched by Hawks keeper Matthew Heimowitz. Cougars netminder Rene Sanchez kept the potent Hunter offense at bay for a while, making four stops and keeping the visitors off the scoreboard. After a half, the CUNY foes were scoreless.

In the second session, it was all Hawks. Hunter broke through for its first goal in the 48th minute when Bradley Espejo drew a foul in the box. He then cashed in on the ensuing penalty kick, beating Sanchez left side to make it 1-0 Hunter. 11:23 later, Hunter increased its advantage to 2-0 when Conor Sullivan sliced home Ahmed Abubakar's feed. Unassisted tallies by Kristopher Lage (64:11) and Saleel Eldin (70:11) followed later, and David Zlobinsky capped off Hunter's slew of second half goals with a tally in the 80th minute.

Hunter goaltender Matthew Heimowitz registered the shutout, making seven stops throughout the course of the CUNY clash. Sanchez had six saves for Medgar Evers despite yielding the five goals.

The Hawks held a commanding 31-12 edge in the shots category.

Medgar Evers will next return to the pitch at a date to-be-determined against CUNYAC foe York College. The game will be the home finale for the Cougars.
