Men's soccer edged by York College 2-1 on Thursday in CUNYAC competition

Box Score The Medgar Evers men's soccer team played its 2023 home finale on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 nail-biter to CUNYAC foe York College by a score of 2-1. The match took place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 1-11-2 on the season (0-5-1 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals solidified their first victory of the season, moving to 1-10-1 (1-6 CUNYAC).

In the early stages of the contest, particularly the opening 10 minutes, Medgar Evers had a chance to break the match open, but on-goal shots by the Cougars' Kazandu Small and Mike Eliacin were both saved by York netminder George Molina to keep the match scoreless.

Medgar Evers broke through for the first goal of the match at 22:50. The Cougars' Daniel Hackett lofted a corner kick towards the head of Taye Simon, who pushed the ball to the very front of the goal, where Eliacin capitalized by tapping the ball past Molina to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.

Later, the Cardinals knotted the match at a goal apiece (34:32) when Anuar Arias twisted a ball into the top right corner of the net, over the outstretched arms of Medgar goalkeeper Rene Sanchez. The Mondesir brothers, Kevin and Marvin, each registered an assist on that tally. At the half, the CUNYAC foes were tied, 1-1.

The final goal of the clash, the game-winner, was scored by York's Alex Conde at 58:32, as he headed in a pass from Kevin Mondesir. Medgar Evers outshot the Cardinals 8-5 for the remainder of the match, but the Cougars were unable to net the equalizer, as the Cardinals held on for the slimmest of victories.

Medgar Evers held a 25-13 edge in the shots category, while also earning seven corner kicks compared to just one for York College.

Rene Sanchez, who has been so dependable for Medgar Evers since he started manning the goal, made three saves on the day. His counterpart, George Molina, was stellar for the Caridnals, yielding just one goal and making 11 saves.

Medgar Evers returns to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Lehman College's South Field to battle the Lightning in CUNYAC play. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
