Box Score For the first time in 24 years, the Medgar Evers College Cougars are headed to the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men's Soccer Championship game.
Shackoneal Myrurrie once again delivered in the postseason, scoring the decisive goal in overtime to lift Medgar Evers to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Hunter College Hawks on Saturday at Randall's Island Field. The Cougars battled through 90 minutes of scoreless regulation before Myrurrie found the back of the net in the 100th minute, blasting a ball into the upper-right corner of the net to solidify the win for his squad.Â
The victory represents a landmark achievement for the Medgar Evers men's soccer program, which will compete for its first CUNYAC championship since 2002. The Cougars have demonstrated their ability to deliver in high-pressure situations throughout the tournament, earning consecutive 1-0 victories over Brooklyn College and Hunter to secure their place in the final. Medgar Evers' defense has been incredibly stout, currently boasting a shutout streak that spans 272:50.
Saturday's semifinal was a far more tightly contested affair than the teams' regular-season meeting on Oct. 22. In that matchup, Medgar Evers overwhelmed Hunter with four goals in the opening 28 minutes and went on to shut out the Hawks. This time, however, Hunter kept the Cougars off the scoreboard throughout regulation, forcing Medgar Evers to remain patient and disciplined in a tense, defensive battle.
Despite the Hawks' improved defensive effort, the Cougars continued to generate opportunities throughout the contest. Medgar Evers finished with a commanding 16-5 advantage in total shots and put eight attempts on target. Hunter goalkeeper Matthew Fridburg kept his team in contention with seven saves, while Cougars goalkeeper Vendel Joseph turned aside all three shots he faced to preserve the shutout.
As the match moved into overtime, Medgar Evers continued searching for the breakthrough. After creating several opportunities in the extra period, the Cougars finally struck at the 100-minute mark. Mariko Diarisso set up Myrurrie, who finished the opportunity for his 15th goal of the season and sent Medgar Evers into celebration. The goal capped a determined performance from the Cougars, who outshot Hunter 5-0 in overtime.Â
Medgar Evers will now turn its attention to the 2026 CUNYAC Men's Soccer Championship, where it will face John Jay College on Saturday, Nov. 7, at York College. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., with the Cougars looking to cap their historic postseason run by bringing the conference championship back to Medgar Evers for the first time in nearly two-and-a-half decades.Â
