Cougars undone by Panthers' 29 service aces in three-set defeat at SUNY Purchase

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team lost a non-conference match Monday evening, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by scores of 12-25, 7-25, and 12-25. The match took place in Purchase, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 0-16 on the 2023 campaign, while the home squad upped its mark to 5-18.

Leading the way for Medgar Evers despite the loss was Jennifer Metra, as she registered a team-best three kills to go along with six digs. Veteran Quiara Brye Bey's nine digs led all players, and her three assists were a team-high. Finally, Aaliyah Chapman finalized her evening with four digs, a kill, a service ace, and an assist.

For SUNY Purchase, the Panthers were paced by Ava Landreth, as she hit .471 on the evening with a match-high 10 kills to go along with three service aces. Maya Brown piled seven kills while notching three service aces, and setter Natalie Leite recorded match-highs of 27 assists and 10 service aces. As a team, the Panthers collected 29 service aces, with five different players registering at least three.

The first set was knotted at six points apiece until the Panthers scored nine consecutive points to catapult to a 15-6 advantage. That aforementioned run featured three kills by Brown, and a pair of service aces by Marcella Pena. The Cougars were able to scratch back into the set with four straight points, thanks to three attack errors and a service error by the hosts. That made it 15-10 in favor of Purchase. The Panthers then outscored Medgar Evers 10-2 to close the opening set.

In the second, SUNY Purchase led 15-7 before running off 10 straight points to win it by 18. Leite piled six service aces during that ferocious run, leading the Panthers into the final set of the evening with a 2-0 advantage.

Medgar Evers trailed just 8-5 in the third before SUNY Purchase scored eight straight to take a commanding 16-5 advantage. The Cougars refused to go quietly, scoring four straight points, the latter of those points coming via a service ace by Metra. Purchase answered by notching the next six, going up 22-9, before eventually advancing to win the set 25-12, and essentially, the match, 3-0.

The Cougars will now have two days off before traveling to the Ferguson Recreation Center in Madison, NJ to take on non-conference foe FDU-Florham. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
