Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offensive outburst propels Cougars to dominant 5-1 victory over Penn State Scranton

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team used a ferocious second half effort to come back and earn its first victory of the 2023 campaign, defeating the Nittany Lions of Penn State Scranton by a score of 5-1. It was the Cougars' first win since October 16, 2021. The match took place at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Cougars improved to 1-6-1 on the year, while Penn State Scranton dipped to 1-4.

Things didn't look promising for the Cougars early on, as the Nittany Lions broke through for the first goal of the afternoon. A Medgar Evers turnover deep in their own end opened up an opportunity for the visitors, who took advantage when Owen Sheils blasted a loose ball into an open net (29:01) to make it 1-0 Penn State Scranton. That would be the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes of action.

In the second half, the Cougars' offense erupted in a big way. Medgar Evers tied the match just 2:39 into the second half (47:39), as Mike Eliacin took advantage of a beautiful pass from veteran Isaac Akindipe to slash the ball home. 5:28 later, at 53:07, Eliacin struck again, this time using a fantastic feed from newcomer Bernado Guerrier before slicing the ball into the back of the net for a goal. That gave the hosts a 2-1 edge.

Later, an Emmanuel Turay goal (67:54, from Kelcity Blacky) gave the Cougars a 3-1 cushion. Blacky would then score a goal of his own at 73:12 (from Taye Simon) to increase Medgar Evers' lead to 4-1. The Cougars put an exclamation point on the comeback victory at 87:18, when Rene Sanchez netted a goal (from Simon and Amadou Ballo) to put the hosts ahead by four goals. Medgar would go on to win the non-conference match, 5-1.

In what turned out to be a dominating performance, Medgar Evers outshot the Nittany Lions by a count of 32-7. The hard-working Cougars earned nine corner kicks compared to two for the opposition.

Medgar Evers rookie netminder Aiden Ally earned his first career win in net, needing to make just one save to do so.

The Cougars will look to make it two consecutive victories on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers takes to the road to battle CUNYAC foe Baruch College. The match will take place on the No. 70 field at Randall's Island. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
