Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Slow start hinders Cougars as Medgar loses CUNYAC clash to Baruch, 5-2

The Cougars' men's soccer team came up short in its bid to solidify a second consecutive victory, tonight falling to CUNYAC foe Baruch College by a score of 5-2. The match took place on field No. 70 at Randall's Island. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 1-7-1 on the 2023 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Bearcats, who were the 2022 runners-up, improved to 4-4 (3-0 CUNYAC).

Ammar Ahmedshaker got the scoring started in this one, smashing home a free kick at 10:56 to give Baruch a 1-0 edge. 3:19 later, at 14:15, Taner Ceylan lofted a corner kick into the box that was headed home by Mohamed Nasr to push the Bearcats' edge to 2-0.

Baruch stayed aggressive offensively, adding a third goal at 16:49 when Arman Celebi took advantage of a low cross, collecting it and dribbling for a moment before tapping the ball home to make it 3-0 in favor of the hosts. Julio Ramirez and Nasr registered assists on the play. The Bearcats capped their scoring for the half at 26:23, as Celebi scored yet again, notching a tally off a pass from Daniel Grishin to make it 4-0. That would be the final goal scored of the half, a session that saw Baruch hold a commanding 11-1 edge in shots.

The second half was much more balanced, and also featured the Cougars putting forth a solid comeback attempt. At 60:38, Medgar Evers got on the board when Saibo Ceesay scored his second goal of the 2023 campaign, slicing home newcomer Amadou Ballo's pass to make it 4-1. Just 4:22 later, the Cougars inched even closer, as veteran Dadley Dorfeuille scored an unassisted goal to bring Medgar to within two, at 4-2.

Over the ensuing 19:21, that aforementioned score remained intact until the Bearcats ended any chance of a Cougars comeback when Daniel Fomenko scored a goal (at 84:21, from Andre Kinal) to make it 5-2 Baruch. That would be the final tally for either squad, as the Bearcats held on to stay unblemished in conference competition.

Remarkably, the Bearcats have now won 11 straight CUNYAC matches, and have not lost a regular season match to a conference foe in almost two calendar years. Baruch's last CUNYAC loss was back on October 16, 2021, when the Bearcats were shutout by Lehman, 4-0.

Baruch finished the match with a 20-9 edge in the shots category, though Medgar Evers was only out-shot 9-8 in the final 45 minutes. The Bearcats held a slight edge in corner kicks, earning four to the Cougars' three.

Jon Legasa earned the victory in net for the hosts, as he played the opening 45 minutes and didn't allow a goal while not facing a shot. His counterpart, Medgar's Aiden Ally, took the defeat, allowing all five goals while also making five stops.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will host the struggling Beavers of CCNY. The match will take place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY, with a start-time of 3:00pm.
