Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Taye Simon scores two goals, Rene Sanchez piles 12 saves as Cougars play to 2-2 tie with CCNY

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie yesterday against CUNYAC foe CCNY. The match took place at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the result, the Cougars are now 1-7-2 on the 2023 campaign (0-2-1 CUNYAC), while the Beavers' record now sits at 1-6-1 (1-2-1 CUNYAC).

On what was a very rainy Saturday throughout the New York area, the inclement weather subsided just before the Cougars and Beavers got underway. After 36 scoreless minutes of soccer, the hosts broke through for the opening goal when Taye Simon notched an unassisted tally to make it 1-0 in favor of the Cougars. That would turn out to be the lone goal of the opening session.

In the second half, Simon struck again in the 51st minute, collecting a pass from Mamadou Bah before slicing the ball into the goal to increase Medgar Evers' edge to 2-0. The Cougars looked to be in complete control of the match, but the Beavers refused to go away.

CCNY sliced its deficit to one goal in the 65th minute when Arlind Cela drew a foul. On his ensuing kick, he launched a ball just over the head of Cougars netminder Rene Sanchez from about 20 feet out to make it 2-1. 15:20 later, the Beavers' Yusuf Abdelmegid drilled a shot from about the same distance, with it also going over the arms of Sanchez to square the match at two goals apiece.

The final 10 minutes of the match was played in a steady rain, and perhaps the best opportunity for either team to take the lead was with 5:05 left, when CCNY's Cela missed a golden chance to put his team ahead, blasting a ball wide from about 15 feet away. From there, neither team came close to scoring a go-ahead, and the CUNYAC clash ended with the teams knotted at two apiece.

CCNY held a 22-10 edge in the shots department, including a 9-3 advantage in the final 45 minutes of action. The Beavers earned seven corner kicks compared to three for the hosts, and the fouls were nearly even, with CCNY drawing 11, and Medgar Evers being whistled for nine.

Medgar's Rene Sanchez played well in goal, stopping 12 shots despite allowing the two second half goals. His counterpart, CCNY's Mikhael Torres made four saves while allowing two scores.

The Cougars will return to action on Monday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will play an Indigenous Day matinee against the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute. The match will take place at Aviator Field, with a start-time of 1:00pm.
