Cougars lose to non-conference borough foe Pratt in Indigenous Day matinee

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team dropped an Indigenous Day matinee contest at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, NY, falling to non-conference borough foe Pratt Institute by a score of 7-2. The Cougars dipped to 1-8-2 on the 2023 campaign with the defeat, while the Cannoneers earned their first victory, improving to 1-5-1.

On what was a sunny, windy day at Aviator Field, Pratt Institute took a quick 2-0 advantage inside the opening 11 minutes of action, thanks to two gorgeous headers, one by Griffin Benkovszky, and the other by Paxton Lyman. Bryan Hong-Dominguez registered an assist on the first of those two aforementioned tallies, with Jude Fox collecting an assist on the other.

In the 20th minute, at 19:07, the visitors increased their edge to 3-0 when Morvens Regis collected George Batska's pass in the box before blasting the ball home. Pratt continued the offensive onslaught, adding two more goals before time expired on the half, both courtesy of Benkovszky. The goals came at 33:59 (from Flavio Clermont) and 43:31. At the half, the Cannoneers led 5-0.

Medgar Evers broke through for a goal in the 51st minute, as newcomer Bernado Guerrier cashed in on a penalty kick opportunity at 50:46. That brought the hosts to within four goals with plenty of time remaining.

Pratt responded to the Cougars' goal with another tally in the 60th minute, as Hong-Dominguez found the back of the net (from Benkovszky) to make it 6-1 Cannoneers. Benkovszky capped off his incredible day by adding one more goal, slashing Hong-Dominguez's pass into the net to put Pratt up 7-1.

The Cougars were able to notch one more goal, courtesy of Taye Simon, as the veteran scored in the 78th minute (77:06) to pull Medgar Evers to within five at 7-2.

Medgar Evers held a 22-19 edge in the shots category, while also earning six corner kick chances compared to five for the Cannoneers.

Wednesday, October 11 will be the Cougars' next match, as Medgar Evers will travel to Randall's Island to battle CUNYAC foe John Jay College. The match will take place on field No. 74, with a start-time of 3:30pm.
