Cougars silenced by Beavers 3-0 in final CUNYAC match of 2023 campaign

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team dropped its final CUNYAC match of the 2023 campaign on Monday evening, falling to the Beavers of CCNY by scores of 10-25, 5-25, and 11-25. The conference clash took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Harlem, NY. The Cougars dipped to 0-18 on the season with the defeat (0-7 CUNYAC), while the Beavers improved to 8-11, and 3-4 in CUNYAC competition.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was paced by Britonya Lloyd, as she finished with a team-high three kills, while also tying for the team-high with eight digs. Jennifer Metra notched a pair of kills while tying Lloyd with eight digs. Quiara Brye Bey's four assists led the Cougars, and she also finished with seven digs. Finally, it was Adacia Scotland finalizing her evening with seven digs.

The Beavers were led by Arianna Rivas' match-highs of eight kills and nine digs. She also contributed five service aces, as well. Nila Tom hit .556, finishing with six kills (6-1-9), and Rosalynda Russo and Bianka Catral registered five kills apiece. Setter Viviana Alatorre piled a match-high 24 assists, and her six service aces also led all players.

CCNY led the first set 16-8 before closing it out on a 9-2 run to win it, 25-10. After dominating the second set 25-5, the Beavers yielded the first point of the third set before putting together 11 unanswered to grab a commanding 11-1 edge. Later, CCNY held a 24-7 lead, but the Cougars scored four straight to make it 24-11. The Beavers then closed out the set and the match via a kill by Fatimah Coppin.

The Beavers hit .268 on the evening (30-8-82) compared to the Cougars, who hit in the negative (9-16-70, -.100). CCNY held a commanding 24-1 edge in the service aces category, while also edging the visitors in digs, 39-37.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Cougars play their first of three home matches in an eight day span, welcoming the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
