Despite valiant effort, Cougars defeated by Dolphins in three sets in non-conference competition

The Cougars' women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference loss on Thursday evening, falling to the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent by scores of 12-25, 13-25, and 8-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers slipped to 0-19 on the 2023 campaign, while the Dolphins improved to a mark of 10-11.

Despite the loss for Medgar, Britonya Lloyd put forth a hearty effort for the hosts, posting team-highs of four kills (4-0-16, .250) and eight digs. She also added an assist, as well. Freshman Adacia Scotland contributed two kills, and Jennifer Metra and Aaliyah Chapman registered seven and five digs, respectively.

Pacing Mount Saint Vincent was Jocelyn Castro, as she recorded a match-high 10 kills (10-1-13, .692) to go along with two digs. Elizabeth Flores notched seven kills (7-0-9, .778) while adding seven digs and a pair of service aces, and Stacy Njimogu finalized her evening with seven kills, four digs, and three service aces. Setter Brianna Ayuso piled a match-high 28 assists, and Isabella Garcia registered match-highs of 11 service aces and nine digs.

The Cougars held a brief 2-1 advantage in the opening set before the Dolphins put together an 8-0 run, highlighted by four aces from Garcia, and a pair of kills by Castro. Mount Saint Vincent later led 10-3, before Medgar Evers ran off four consecutive points to pull to within three, at 10-7. Chapman registered a kill during the Cougars' aforementioned run.

The pendulum would then swing back the visitors' way, as the Dolphins ran off five straight to catapult back ahead 15-7. After the teams exchanged the next three points, Mount Saint Vincent closed the set with a 9-3 spurt to win it, 25-13.

Medgar Evers held a 4-2 advantage in the second set, as a pair of Scotland kills, along with a Lloyd kill, gave the hosts the early edge. Later, with the set knotted at six apiece, the Dolphins put together a 6-0 run to snatch a 12-6 advantage. Flores and Castro picked up two kills apiece during that Dolphins spurt. Later, the Cougars kept themselves within respectable length of the Dolphins, as the visitors led 21-13. Mount Saint Vincent then scored the final four points of the set to close the door, winning it 25-13.

Holding all of the momentum at this juncture of the match, the Dolphins dominated the third, winning it 25-8, impressively registering 17 of the set's final 19 points in the process.

Mount Saint Vincent hit .321 for the evening (36-11-78), while the Cougars hit .000 (9-9-56). The Dolphins piled 24 service aces, while also holding a 38-29 edge in the digs category.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Saturday, as the Cougars will play their final road match of the 2023 campaign, traveling to Bronxville, NY to battle Sarah Lawrence College. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
