Cougars bested by Beavers in non-conference affair

The Cougars' women's volleyball team suffered a non-conference defeat on Thursday evening, dropping a match to CCNY by scores of 12-25, 13-25, and 10-25. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dopped to 0-10 on the 2023 campaign, while the Beavers improved to 5-6.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, newcomer Jennifer Metra paced the hosts, as she finished with a team-high four kills to go along with two assists and a pair of digs. Veteran Raine Williams' three service aces were a team-high (she also added four digs), and Britonya Lloyd's eight digs led all Cougars.

For the visiting Beavers, Bianka Catral led the way for CCNY, posting a match-high 11 kills while hitting .333 (11-4-21). She also contributed seven service aces and four digs, as well. Arianna Rivas had a nice all-around match, notching seven kills, a match-high 10 service aces, and six digs, and Rosalynda Russo finalized her evening with five kills. Viviana Alatorre's 21 assists were a match-high, and Michelle Liu's 10 digs led all competitors.

In the opening set, the Cougars led 4-2 in the early stages following Williams' service aces. But, after a bad set by Williams gave CCNY serve, the Beavers scored 11 consecutive points to take a commanding 14-4 edge. Rivas notched seven service aces during that spurt. The Cougars were able to score three of the ensuing four points to pull to within 15-7, but CCNY kept Medgar Evers at a distance, advancing to win the set by double digits (25-12).

The Beavers were clinging to a 9-8 advantage in the second set, before CCNY ran off 11 consecutive points to catapult ahead by a count of 20-8. Medgar Evers then scored three straight, highlighted by a kill by Metra and an ace by Williams, to make it 20-11. CCNY responded with a 5-2 run to capture the set, 25-13.

After CCNY scored the opening three points of the third set, Medgar Evers scored six consecutive points to snatch a 6-3 edge. Metra and Quiara Brye Bey each tallied a kill during that run, and Williams contributed an ace. Medgar later led 7-4, before 10 straight points put the visitors ahead 14-7. Three kills by Catral highlighted that spurt for CCNY. For the remainder of the set, the Cougars were only able to register three points, as CCNY won set three 25-10, and essentially, won the match.

The Beavers held a healthy 28-3 edge in the service aces column.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Saturday, October 7, as the Cougars travel to Lehman College's APEX Center for a CUNYAC tri-match. The Cougars will take on Hunter College at noon, following by a clash with the Lightning at 2:00pm.
