Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Sheily Quezada becomes Medgar Evers' all-time leader in blocked shots; Cougars fall to Rams in home opener

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team dropped its home opener on Tuesday evening, falling to the Rams of Farmingdale State College by a score of 67-31. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers has now dropped two consecutive games, falling to 1-2. The Rams squared their record at 1-1 with the triumph.

Prior to the game, sophomore standout Sheily Quezada was honored, as assistant coach Jenifer Jules presented the 6'0 forward/center with a commemorative "NCAA Statistical Champion" plaque, which saluted Quezada for leading the nation in blocks per contest (4.3) during the 2022-2023 season.

Less than three minutes into the non-conference clash, Quezada made more history for the Cougars, swatting a shot to make her the all-time blocks leader in school history with 112, surpassing the previous record holder, Shauntelle Nelson. The game was stopped momentarily as the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics recognized Quezada, with the crowd at the Cougars Cave giving the standout sophomore a rousing ovation.

For the evening, Quezada finished with six points, while tying for the game-high of 12 rebounds, and swatting a game-high three shots. Dating back to last season, it was the seventh time in eight contests that Quezada finished with double digits in rebounding. In addition, veteran Mariame Gueye knocked down three shots from downtown, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds, and Britonya Lloyd connected on three of her five attempts to finalize her evening with six points and five boards.

In the victory for the Rams, Taneece Wooden scored a game-high 14 points, draining six of her nine attempts from the floor in the process. She also snatched six boards, and registered a game-high six steals, while tallying three assists. Gemma Pohalski recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. Her five assists also led all players. Erin Conte netted nine points while registering five steals and adding four assists, and Victoria Kantzian added nine points and four rebounds. Finally, Isabella Greenwald finished with 11 boards.

Farmingdale dominated for most of the evening, scoring the opening 11 points over a 3:16 span. That spurt was highlighted by Conte's six points. The Rams eventually built their lead 14, 15-1, with still over half of the first quarter remaining. Lloyd's jumper late in the quarter brought the Cougars to within a manageable 10 points after 10 minutes of action.

After the Rams converted on a free throw six seconds into the quarter, Medgar Evers scored the next four points, via consecutive Metra converted layups, to pull the hosts to within seven (20-13). Unfortunately, the Cougars were only able to convert on one more field goal over the final 8:15 of the half, and the Rams closed the period on a 15-3 run to take a commanding 35-16 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, Farmingdale took a 22-point lead when Mia Simmons drained a triple with 5:51 remaining to put the Rams ahead 43-21. For the remainder of the game, the visitors would never lead by any less than 20 points, eventually winning the contest by 36.

Both teams struggled mightily with their shooting throughout the evening. Farmingdale hit on just 34.2 percent of its shots (26-76), including an inefficient 11.5 percent of its shots from downtown (3-26), and only 12 of its 26 free throws (46.2 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers hit on just 12 field goals all evening (12-52, 23.1 percent), and drained just 23.5 percent of its shots from the free throw line (4-17).

The Rams held a respectable 56-47 advantage on the glass, while also forcing 37 turnovers while committing 21 of their own. Farmingdale State tallied 20 steals compared to eight for Medgar Evers, and the Cougars held a 6-3 edge in swatted shots.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will take to the road to battle SUNY Purchase. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
