Cougars split pair of games in 2023-2024 Dr. Betty Shabazz Women's Basketball Memorial Tournament

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team earned mixed results in the 2023-2024 Dr. Betty Shabazz Women's Basketball Memorial Tournament, defeating Pratt Institute by a score of 69-38 on Saturday afternoon, before falling to the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the championship game 75-36 on Sunday. With that split output, the Cougars are now 1-1 on the season.

In the non-Medgar Evers tournament games, Mount Saint Vincent dominated Bard College 72-33 on Saturday. The consolation contest, which was set to pit the Raptors against the Cannoneers on Sunday, was canceled due to Pratt Institute's injuries.

For the Cougars, in their victory over Pratt Institute, freshman point guard Aaliyah Lyons connected on 10 of her 20 attempts from the floor, including three out of six from downtown, to finish with a game-high 23 points. She also added nine rebounds, a game-high six assists, and three steals. Sheily Quezada drained eight of her 17 attempts from the floor, scoring 17 points while tying for the team-high of 12 boards. Her five swatted shots were also a game-high, and she also tallied three steals. Veteran Mariame Gueye finished with 11 points and five caroms, and Britonya Lloyd posted a double-double with 10 points, 12 boards, and four assists.

The highlight performances for the Cannoneers came from senior Kylie Grant, as she posted a double-double, scoring a team-high 17 points to go along with 13 rebounds, four assists, and four steals, and Anabela Jakelic, as she scored 13 points and pulled down a game-best 18 rebounds. Finally, it was Almudena Valenzuela finishing with eight points.

Medgar Evers raced out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening 2:06, as Lloyd registered a pair of buckets, and Lyons added another. Pratt responded with a 10-2 run over a span of 3:00 to catapult ahead 10-8. Grant scored seven of Pratt's 10 points during that spurt. The pendulum would then swing the Cougars' way, as the hosts closed the period with a ferocious 11-0 run to snatch a 19-10 edge after 10 minutes of action. Quezada accounted for nine of Medgar Evers' 11 points during that spirited run.

Medgar Evers scored the first bucket of the second quarter to go up 21-10, but the Cannoneers kept the game close for a time, going on a 12-4 run to pull to within three points, 25-22, with 3:02 remaining in the half. Medgar Evers closed the half on an 8-3 run to keep respectable distance between itself and the visitors, with Lyons netting four of those eight points. The Cougars led 33-25 at the break.

The Cougars dominated the second half. They held a 48-31 edge after three quarters of action, before running away with things even further in the fourth, scoring 21 points compared to the visitors' seven. Medgar Evers allowed just five Pratt field goals over the final 20 minutes, while draining 15 of their own (15-for-37, 40.5 percent).

Medgar Evers shot 41.3 percent (31-75), while the Cannoneers connected on just 18.8 percent of their attempts from the floor (12-64). The Cougars dominated the glass, snatching 60 boards, while the visitors grabbed 37. Medgar Evers tallied 17 assists, while Pratt finished with six, and Medgar also held a 6-1 edge in blocks. The Cannoneers tallied seven steals while the hosts earned six, and Pratt won the turnover battle, committing 18 miscues, while the hosts had 19.

In the Cougars' loss to the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Quezada was Medgar Evers' top scorer and rebounder, netting 12 points while snatching seven boards and blocking a pair of shots. Her four steals were also a team-high. Lyons finalized her afternoon with 10 points and a pair of rebounds, and Jennifer Metra connected on three of her five shot attempts, contributing nine points and three boards.

Mount Saint Vincent's Magan Jackson put forth a phenomenal effort for the victors, scoring a game-high 21 points (10-13 FG) while adding four rebounds and tallying three steals. Kira Villegas finished with nine points, six steals, five rebounds, and five assists, and Kayla Hanley had a fine all-around game as well, scoring eight points, snatching five rebounds, tallying five assists, and registering three steals. Finally, it was JaKaia Lotz finalizing her afternoon with seven points and three boards.

The Cougars took their only lead of the contest with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter when Lyons converted on a fastbreak layup to put the hosts ahead 7-6. A 6-0 run by Mount Saint Vincent over the next 61 seconds, capped by a converted trifecta by Hanley, gave Mount Saint Vincent a 12-7 advantage. Mount Saint Vincent outscored Medgar Evers 9-6 for the remainder of the quarter to take a 21-13 lead after 10 minutes of action.

Over the final three quarters, the Dolphins completely dominated the action, scoring 54 points while holding the Cougars to just six field goals and 23 points. For the game, the Dolphins converted on 41.2 percent of their shots, draining 28 of 68 attempts. Medgar Evers converted on just 26.8 percent, hitting on 11 of 41.
