Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Career effort from Sheily Quezada paces Cougars past Beavers in CUNYAC opener

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team registered its second victory in its past three games, yesterday defeating the Beavers of the City College of New York in a CUNYAC clash by a score of 56-43. The game took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Harlem, NY. With the win, the Cougars improved to a mark of 3-3 overall (1-0 CUNYAC), while CCNY dipped to 1-3 (0-1 CUNYAC).

Leading the way for the Cougars was Sheily Quezada, as she put forth an all-time effort, posting career-highs of 31 points (11-24 FG) and 26 rebounds. She also swatted seven shots, as well, giving her a current blocks-per-game average of 4.3, which is the same number she averaged last season when she led NCAA Division III in that particular category. Jennifer Metra scored 11 points (9-11 FT), snatched seven rebounds, recorded three assists, and added two steals, and Mariame Gueye contributed six points and seven boards. Finally, rookie Aaliyah Lyons scored five points while snatching six rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Beavers, Kasia Morrison finished with a team-high 17 points. Her five steals led all players, and she also snatched a pair of rebounds and registered two assists. Anna Vikatos narrowly missed a double-double, scoring eight points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and tallying four steals, and Anais Rosa added eight points, five boards, three steals, and two assists. Finally, it was Joscelyn Ramos finalizing her evening with six points, a game-high six assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

Medgar Evers raced out to a 5-0 edge, as Lyons converted on a layup just four seconds into the game, and Quezada scored a bucket and converted on a free throw 59 seconds later. The Cougars led by as many as seven points on two occasions (11-4 and 15-8) during the quarter, eventually holding a 17-11 edge after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter featured an offensive struggle by both squads. The teams combined for just four field goals (two apiece) and 16 points. As the curtain dropped on the first half, the Cougars held a modest 25-19 edge.

The Cougars dominated the third quarter, scoring nine of the period's just 12 points to take a 34-22 advantage. During that aforementioned 9-3 spurt, Quezada accounted for four points, and Gueye connected on a trifecta. Medgar Evers continued to gradually build its advantage, eventually taking a commanding 43-26 lead after three quarters. For the period, the Cougars outscored the Beavers, 18-7.

CCNY put a scare into the Cougars in the final quarter, as the Beavers spent the first 7:16 of the period slicing into the visitors' lead. The Beavers put together an 11-2 run to close to within eight points (45-37) with 2:44 to play. The Cougars showed resilience, though, putting together a 9-1 run over the next 69 seconds to take a 54-38 advantage, essentially putting the game away. Down the stretch, Medgar Evers connected on nine of their 14 free throw attempts to pull away from the hosts. The Cougars would win the game by 13 points, 56-43.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with the Cougars connecting on just 25 percent of their shots (15-60), and the Beavers earning a conversion rate of 20.3 percent (14-69). Medgar Evers dominated on the glass, snatching 78 rebounds compared to 47 for the Beavers. CCNY led in almost every other major category, swatting nine shots to eight for the Cougars, piling 15 steals to Medgar Evers' five, and also winning the turnover battle (CCNY had 15 miscues, Medgar Evers 28).

Medgar Evers will now have 27 days off before returning to the court on Friday afternoon, December 29, as the Cougars will take to the road to battle SUNY Old Westbury. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 2:00pm.
