Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Quezada's sensational effort (20 points, 15 rebounds, six blocked shots) paces Cougars to 55-46 win over Panthers

The Cougars' women's basketball team made a successful return to the court following a four-week break, turning back the Panthers of Old Westbury by a score of 55-46. The contest took place at the Clark Athletic Center in Old Westbury, NY. With the victory, Medgar Evers improved to a mark of 4-3 on the 2023-2024 campaign, while the Panthers dipped to 2-7.

Sophomore Sheily Quezada turned in a dominating performance for the victorious visitors. The standout registered game-highs of 20 points, 15 rebounds, and six swatted shots, while also tallying a pair of steals. Mariame Gueye connected on four of her eight attempts from the floor, finishing with 10 points and five rebounds, and Andecia Liverpool narrowly missed posting a double-double, scoring eight points while snatching nine rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Panthers, Old Westbury was paced by Sierra Rowe and Tyela Davidson, as they tied for the team-high of 12 points. Davidson also contributed seven rebounds, a game-high six steals, and two assists. Kasiobi Okenwa contributed nine points and 11 rebounds, and Tamyia Jordan's 13 rebounds led all Panthers.

The Cougars never trailed in the matinee contest, starting hot by racing out to a 9-0 advantage in the opening 2:40 of play. Gueye got the scoring started 33 seconds into the contest with a layup in the paint. Quezada followed with a bucket 42 seconds later to make it 4-0 Medgar Evers. Later, with 2:00 gone by in the first quarter, Gueye connected on a triple to push the Cougars' edge to 7-0, and the visitors capped the early run when Liverpool converted on a layup to make it 9-0. Old Westbury responded with a 9-2 run, capped by a converted three-point basket by Rowe, to pull to within two (11-9) with 2:45 left in the opening quarter. Medgar Evers closed the period with two consecutive baskets (courtesy of Liverpool and Jennifer Metra) to snatch a 15-9 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

Rowe started the second quarter with a bucket, but the Cougars answered by putting together an 8-0 run over a span of 1:53 to catapult to a 23-11 advantage. That aforementioned spurt was highlighted by Quezada's four points. Medgar Evers led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter (34-21) before taking a 34-23 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In a low-scoring third quarter that featured many pendulum swings, the Cougars netted the opening four points of the period to take a commanding 38-23 advantage. The Panthers answered with a 6-0 run over a span of 4:05 to slice the visitors' lead to nine (38-29), but the Cougars closed out the quarter strong, outscoring Old Westbury 5-1 over the final 3:54 of the third to take a 43-30 advantage into the final period.

Old Westbury close the gap significantly in the fourth quarter, pulling to within five points (49-44) with 3:54 remaining following a converted layup by Phalan Smith. Later, with 1:58 remaining, freshman Aaliyah Lyons, who had been quiet for most of the game, hit a huge three-point basket to essentially ice the contest. That trifecta put the Cougars up 52-44, and Medgar Evers never looked back, going on to win the game by a score of 55-46.

Both squads had their struggles shooting the basketball, as Medgar Evers converted on just 21 of 65 attempts from the floor (32.3 percent), and the Panthers earned a 24.3 percent conversion rate (18-74). The Cougars dominated the glass, snatching 62 rebounds while the hosts pulled down 49, and Medgar Evers swatted eight shots to Old Westbury's three. The Panthers did lead the steals category, piling 16 while the Cougars had 11, and Old Westbury held a slight 11-10 edge in assists. Finally, the teams combined for 47 turnovers on the afternoon (Medgar Evers 27, Old Westbury 20).

The Cougars have now won two out of their last three games, and will look to improve to 2-0 in CUNYAC action on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will host Hunter College in a conference clash. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:00pm.
