Cougars struggle in second half, drop home CUNYAC contest to Hunter College

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team dropped their first game of calendar year 2024, suffering a 76-40 defeat to CUNYAC foe Hunter College on Wednesday evening. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Medgar Evers dipped to 4-4 on the year (1-1 CUNYAC), while the Hawks improved to 5-8 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, sophomore standout Sheily Quezada registered her sixth double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 19 points (9-18 FG), snatching a team-best 12 boards, tallying a team-high seven steals, and swatting a game-high four shots. Sophomore point guard Jennifer Metra narrowly missed a double-double, scoring nine points, grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing a team-high three assists, and adding two steals, and Aaliyah Lyons finalized her evening with five points and five boards.

Hunter College was paced by standout Alexa Charles, as she recorded a triple-double, scoring a game-high 26 points, snatching a team-best 10 boards, and leading all players with 10 steals. Erin Cosio contributed 11 points, registered a team-high eight assists, grabbed five rebounds, and tallied three steals, and Kennedy DeRuy finished with 11 points, three steals, and a pair of assists.

The CUNYAC clash was knotted at six in the early stages of the contest when Metra connected on a three-point basket to put the Cougars ahead by a score of 9-6. The Hawks used a 12-0 run over a span of 5:03 to catapult ahead by a score of 18-9 with 1:17 remaining in the first quarter. Charles and Cosio netted six points apiece during the spurt. The pendulum then took a swing Medgar Evers' way, as the Cougars finished the period on a 6-0 run, with Quezada netting six straight. After 10 minutes of action, Hunter led 18-15.

Medgar Evers continued to battle early in the second quarter, pulling to within a point twice (20-19 and 22-21). The Hawks then used a 10-1 run over a span of 5:55 to take a 32-22 edge. Five different Hunter players scored a bucket during that balanced spurt for the visitors. Medgar Evers closed the half with a basket and converted free throw by Lyons. At the half, the Cougars trailed by seven (32-25).

Hunter College dominated the third and fourth quarters. In the third, the Hawks scored the first 13 points to take a commanding 45-25 lead. The Hawks led by as many as 22 in the period (49-27) before taking a 51-34 advantage into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Hawks outscored the hosts 25-6, allowing just three Medgar Evers field goals in the period. Hunter went on to win the contest by 36.

Neither squad shot particularly well on the evening, with Hunter converting on 36.1 percent of its shots (30-83), and the Cougars earning a 34.7 percent conversion rate (17-49). The opportunistic Hawks registered a whopping 33 steals compared to Medgar Evers' 12, and Hunter also held a commanding 22-9 edge in the assists column. The Cougars did hold a 48-41 edge on the glass, while also swatting five shots compared to one for Hunter. The Hawks won the turnover battle, committing 21 miscues, while Medgar Evers had 49.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will take to the road to battle York College in another CUNYAC battle. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
