Box Score The Medgar Evers women's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Wednesday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by a score of 66-50. The game took place at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 4-5 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-2 CUNYAC), while the Lightning won for the second time in three tries to improve to 4-10 (3-1 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, standout Sheily Quezada tied for the team-high of 13 points. Her 15 rebounds and six blocked shots were both game-highs. Point guard Jennifer Metra's 13 points tied Quezada for the team-high, and she also snatched six rebounds, dished four assists, and tallied a team-high three steals, and Mariame Gueye finalized her evening with 12 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of steals.

Leading the way for the Lightning was Ramatoulaye "Rama" Diallo, as she posted a double-double, scoring a game-high 21 points while pulling down a team-best 13 rebounds. Her seven rebounds led all players, and she also added four steals and a pair of blocked shots. Lazy Ozoria registered a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds). She also tallied three steals while adding two dimes, and Mush Muniru also recorded a double-double, netting 11 points, snatching 12 boards, and leading all players with five steals. Finally, it was Myandra "Meme" Duquesnay adding 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Things looked promising for the Cougars in the early stages of the CUNYAC clash, as Medgar Evers dominated the first quarter. After trailing 4-2, the Cougars closed the period on a 9-1 run to snatch an 11-5 advantage after 10 minutes of action. Metra led the way with four points during that aforementioned spurt for the visitors, and the Cougars didn't allow a field goal for the final 6:39 of the opening period.

The Cougars started the second quarter by outscoring the Lightning 6-0, extending their overall run to 15-1. At that juncture, Medgar Evers held a 17-5 edge with 8:09 remaining in the half. The Cougars led 27-15 in the closing seconds of the half before Ozoria knocked down a triple just before the horn. After 20 minutes of action, the Cougars led 27-18.

The Lightning spent the opening 5:54 of the third quarter battling back. Lehman tied the game twice (33-33 and 36-36), and eventually took the lead (39-38) on a Diallo triple. After a Quezada converted free throw deadlocked the game at 39 apiece, Lehman closed the period on an 11-1 run, taking a 50-40 advantage into the fourth quarter. That aforementioned run by the Lightning was highlighted by Diallo's five points.

Lehman scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter to take a commanding 59-40 edge with 7:09 remaining, extending its overall run to 20-1 in the process. The Lightning would build a lead as large as 22 points before going on to win the contest by 16 (66-50).

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball on the evening, with Lehman converting on 35.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-68), and the Cougars earning a conversion rate of just 25.9 percent (15-58). The Cougars did out-rebound the Lightning 51-46, while also swatting seven shots to Lehman's two, but the Lightning piled 14 assists on the evening, while Medgar Evers finished with eight. The opportunistic Lightning held an 18-8 edge in the steals column, and Lehman won the turnover battle, committing 24 miscues while the visitors had 34.

Medgar Evers will look to bounce back on Friday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the Baruch College Bearcats to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC game. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
