Cougars register first victory, defeating Yeshiva University in four-set thriller

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team picked up its first victory of the 2023 campaign in thrilling fashion, turning back the Maccabees of Yeshiva University by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 15-25, and 25-21. The match took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Cougars improved to a mark of 1-20 on the season, while Yeshiva dipped to 2-16.

Leading the way for the Cougars was standout Britonya Lloyd, as she finished with a match-high nine kills to go along with 11 digs. She also tied for the match-high of six service aces. Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with five kills, eight digs, and a pair of assists, and freshman Adacia Scotland added four kills and five digs. Quiara Brye Bey's 13 digs and five assists were both team-highs, and Aaliyah Chapman contributed nine digs and four assists.

Despite the loss for Yeshiva, Charne Lesnoy piled a team-high eight kills. Talia Finn contributed six kills, and Elle Ohayon added five kills while tying for the match-high of six service aces, and contributing 12 digs. Ashley Botnick finished with a match-high 18 digs to go along with four kills, four service aces, and three assists, and setter Zoey Botnick's 18 assists were a match-best.

The opening set featured many pendulum swings. Medgar Evers trailed 5-2 before tying things up at five apiece. Yeshiva then scored the ensuing two points to pull ahead, 7-5, before the Cougars ran off five consecutive points to catapult ahead 10-7. Scotland notched a kill and Brye Bey added an ace during that aforementioned spurt. After the Maccabees scored two straight to pull to within 10-9, Medgar Evers registered the next four to go up 14-9.

Later, with the Cougars leading 17-13, Medgar pulled away for good by going on a 6-0 run. That spurt was highlighted by a pair of service aces by Lloyd. Leading 23-13, the Cougars were in full control, and eventually captured the set, 25-14.

In the second, Yeshiva held an early 8-6 lead in the early stages, before the Cougars ran off seven consecutive points to snatch a 13-8 edge. Lloyd and Metra recorded a kill apiece during the run. The Maccabees spent a large portion of the set battling back, pulling to within a point on three occasions (16-15, 18-17, and 19-18). At 19-18, the Cougars scored three straight, with the latter two points coming via a service ace by Brye Bey, and a kill by Chapman. Leading 22-18, Medgar closed out the set on a 3-1 run to take it, 25-19.

The third set featured a small setback for the Cougars in this match. Medgar Evers held an early 2-0 advantage, but it was all Yeshiva for the remainder of the third. The Maccabees held an 18-14 advantage late, before closing the set on a 7-1 run to take it, 25-15, and extend the match.

Medgar Evers looked to be in prime position to win their first match of the season, as the Cougars held a commanding 9-4 edge in the fourth set. Yeshiva, however, refused to go quietly, going on a 7-0 run to catapult ahead, 11-9. Lesnoy notched two kills, and Ashley Botnick added an ace, during the spurt. The Cougars responded by registering five of the ensuing six points to snatch a 14-12 advantage. Lloyd notched three aces during that run.

Yeshiva outscored the hosts 9-5 over the next 14 points to take a 21-19 lead, threatening to send the match to a fifth and decisive set. Medgar Evers, however, refused to let that happen, as the Cougars soared back, closing the set and the match with six points to snatch the set, 25-21, and win the match, three sets to one. Lloyd was absolutely dominant in closing things out for Medgar Evers, as she accounted for five of the Cougars' final six points, notching three service aces, and two kills.

For the match, Medgar Evers hit .019 (23-21-107), while the visitors hit .000 (29-29-114). Yeshiva held a 15-11 edge in the service aces department, while also piling 61 digs, while the hosts finished with 55.

Medgar Evers will look to make it two consecutive victories to finish the 2023 campaign, as the Cougars will host the Cardinals of York College in a non-conference match at the Cougars Cave on Thursday evening, November 9. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
