Cougars drop first CUNYAC contest of '23-'24, fall to Beavers 66-53 at Nat Holman Gymnasium

The Cougars' men's basketball team dropped its first CUNYAC game of the 2023-2024 season, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 66-53. The game took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in Harlem, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers fell to 2-5 overall (0-1 CUNYAC). The Beavers improved to 5-3 with the victory (1-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, veteran Joshua Jean Pierre scored a game-high 18 points, connecting on seven of his 10 shot attempts in the process. He also snatched six rebounds. Newcomer Nicholas Guillen added 14 points while snatching five boards and dishing a pair of assists, and Dante Simmons registered eight rebounds, as well.

Pacing CCNY was Yassine Sakhi and Edward Beqiri, as they tied for the team-high of 14 points. Sakhi also snatched seven rebounds and tallied four steals. Beqiri finalized his evening with six rebounds, a game-high five assists, four steals, and a pair of blocks. Michael Bowman contributed 13 points and four boards, and finally, it was Ricardo Dixon adding nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.

Medgar Evers raced out to a 5-0 advantage in the opening 1:32 thanks to five points from Evans Jr. The Cougars later led 7-2 before CCNY scored five consecutive points to knot the CUNYAC clash at seven apiece. After a Guillen jumper gave the visitors the advantage back at 9-7, CCNY used an 11-0 run over a span of 4:52 to catapult ahead by a score of 18-9.

The Cougars finally ended the Beavers' run when veteran Aaron Cotterel drained a triple with 5:11 remaining in the half. CCNY would then outscore the Cougars 11-5 for the remainder of the session to take a 29-17 advantage as time expired on the opening half.

In the second half, the Beavers built a lead as large as 19 points, but Medgar Evers was able to close to within 12 points down (59-47) with 3:15 remaining. Despite a valiant effort to work their way back into the game, the Cougars would only convert on two field goals the rest of the way, as CCNY would hold on for a 13-point victory.

Medgar Evers connected on 38.6 percent of its attempts from the floor (22-57), while the Beavers earned a 37.1 percent conversion rate (23-62). The Cougars held a slim 42-41 edge on the glass, but the Beavers recorded 21 assists to the visitors' 11. CCNY tallied 11 steals to Medgar Evers' six, and the Beavers won the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues while forcing 21 Cougar mistakes.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Monday evening, as Medgar Evers will stay on the road to battle non-conference borough foe Pratt Institute. Start-time for the game against the Cannoneers is scheduled for 7:00pm.
