Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mousa Sinera sets NCAA Division III record with 43 rebounds in single game; Hawks outlast Cougars 128-123 in OT

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team dropped a wild game on Tuesday evening, falling to the Hawks of Hunter College by a score of 128-123 in overtime. The game took place at the Cougars Cave on the campus of Medgar Evers. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 5-16 on the 2022-2023 campaign (1-9 CUNYAC). The Hawks improved to 8-12 on the year (5-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, the big story of the evening on the Medgar Evers side was the stellar display by senior Mousa Sinera. The senior, who came into the evening needing just 64 more rebounds to reach 1,000 for his career, took a Giant step in doing so, as he set an NCAA Division III single-game record by snatching 43 rebounds. The previous mark of 36 rebounds was shared by two individuals, including Clinton Montford, who as a member of Methodist, accomplished the feat against Warren Wilson back in 1989. The other student-athlete was Mark Veenstra, as he did it for Calvin against Colorado St.-Pueblo back in 1976.

Remarkably, Sinera came within 10 rebounds of the all-time NCAA record, which was set by Jim Roberts, as he snatched a whopping 53 boards for Sewanee against Lambuth back in February of 1958.

In addition to Sinera's 43 boards this evening, he also registered a game-high 15 assists while netting six points. Sharpshooter Jacob Green put forth an incredible performance, knocking down 10 trifectas to finish with a game-high 35 points. He also grabbed three rebounds, and dished two assists. Sophomore Andre Evans Jr. connected on 13 of his 25 attempts from the floor, finishing with 26 points, 10 dimes, eight rebounds, and two steals, and Richar Frias recorded a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Finally, it was Michael Perez putting together his best game as a Cougar thus far, nailing five of his six attempts from downtown to finish with 19 points. He also snatched three boards, as well.

Seven players scored in double figures for Hunter College, as the Hawks were led by the fantastic effort of Luka Jakic. The standout scored a team-high 23 points (9-11 FT) to go along with a team-high 18 rebounds. He also led all players with three swatted shots, while dishing three helpers, and swiping two steals. Jared Brown scored 16 points, collected five steals, dished four assists, and snatched three rebounds, and Casey Meyers nailed five trifectas to finish with 15 points. Enzo Caceres-Roussel scored 14 points, while Cormac Reilly netted 13. Jeremy Montrose scored 11 points and snatched five rebounds, and Jack Meyers narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 10 points while snatching nine rebounds.

In what was a very competitive game that had the pace of a horse race or a track meet, the teams exchanged the lead eight times in the opening half. Medgar Evers' biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes was 10 points (47-37), with Hunter's largest edge being six (53-47). Hunter led 60-59 in the closing seconds of the half before Jack Meyers connected on a bucket to give the Hawks a slim 62-59 lead as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Hunter held a nine-point lead (85-76) with 12:25 remaining, but an 11-0 run over a span of 2:27 by Medgar Evers catapulted the Cougars to an 87-85 edge. Evans Jr. led the spurt with four points, while Green nailed a trifecta, and Sinera and Frias each contributed a bucket. The game later featured ties of 87-all, 90-all, 92-apiece, and 94-apiece, before Medgar Evers snatched a 100-94 advantage with 6:18 to go.

The Hawks quickly used an 8-2 run to knot the game at 102 apiece, but Green would nail a triple to put the Cougars back ahead 105-102 with four minutes remaining. Over the ensuing 1:39 of action, the game featured three lead changes, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming with Hunter grabbing a four point edge, 112-108, with 1:52 to go.

A pair of converted freebees by Frias with 1:30 left pulled the hosts within two, 112-110. That score would hold steady until the final 14 seconds, when Frias would convert on a jumper to tie the game at 112. Hunter had one final chance to win the game in regulation, but Jared Brown would turn the ball over with one second left, sending the wild contest to overtime.

In the extra period, the Cougars appeared to be in good shape, using consecutive buckets by Evans Jr. and Frias, a converted free throw by Green, and a pair of made freebees by Sinera, to take a 119-112 advantage with 3:37 left. Hunter, however, refused to quit, putting together its own 7-0 run over a span of 1:03 to tie the game at 119 with 2:34 to go.

After Frias converted on two free throws to put Medgar Evers back up 121-119, the Hawks took the lead for good when Montrose nailed a three pointer, putting Hunter up 122-121 with 1:52 remaining. From there, the Hawks outscored the Cougars 6-2 to account for the wild 128-123 victory.

Medgar Evers lost the game despite being the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Cougars connected on 49 of their 104 shot attempts (47.1 percent), while the Hawks hit on just 39 of their 118 shots (33.1 percent). Both teams shot well from the free throw line, with the Hawks shooting 82.8 percent from the stripe (24-29), and Medgar Evers swishing 10 of 15 from the line (66.7 percent). The Cougars out-rebounded Hunter 80-57, while also tallying 38 assists to the Hawks' 33. Hunter dominated in the steals category, swiping 26 compared to six for the hosts, and the Hawks also won the turnover battle, committing just 13, while Medgar Evers had 32.

The Cougars will next return to the court on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Jamaica, Queens to take on CUNYAC foe York College. Start-time for that crucial conference clash is scheduled for 8:00pm.
