Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mousa Sinera becomes just second Cougar to snatch 1,000 career rebounds; York downs Medgar Evers, 79-53

The Cougars' men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC game on Friday evening, falling to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 79-53. The contest took place at the York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, Queens. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 5-17 on the 2022-2023 campaign (1-10 CUNYAC), while the Cardinals improved to 7-15 (6-5 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, senior Mousa Sinera accomplished an incredible feat once again. Three days after setting an NCAA Division III single game record of 43 rebounds against Hunter College, the Bronx, NY native reached the 1,000-rebound mark for his career, snatching 21 boards this evening to do so. With that, Sinera becomes just the second Cougar in the history of the program to collect 1,000 boards, with only Winston Douglas ahead of him (2009-2013, 1,160 career boards).

In addition to the 21 rebounds, Sinera also scored 10 points, dished a team-high five assists, and swatted a pair of shots. Chris Edosomwan connected on five of his nine shots to finish with 10 points, and sharpshooter Jacon Green added 10 points and three boards.

Olawale Kila paced the Cardinals, posting a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Terrell Fullerton nearly posted a double-double, as he scored 16 points, piled nine assists, and grabbed three rebounds, and Tavon Price added 11 points and six boards. Devine Chisholm and Tyres Desinor scored 10 points apiece, and Micaiah Goosby pulled down 12 boards.

The first six minutes of action featured competitive basketball, with the teams exchanging the lead three times. The Cardinals took the lead for good when Fullerton connected on a jumper to give York College a 9-8 advantage with 13:51 remaining in the first half. That kick-started a 23-0 run by the hosts, as the Cardinals catapulted to a commanding 30-8 edge with 7:55 left in the half. That spurt was led by Fullerton, as he led all players with eight points during the run.

The Cardinals would go up by as many as 24 points twice in the half, but the Cougars' Green would knock down a trifecta with 52 seconds remaining in the period to pull the visitors to within 21, 42-21. That score would hold steady as the teams headed to their locker rooms at halftime.

Medgar Evers would put together one run in the second half, as with the Cougars trailing 48-25, they outscored York 10-4 over a span of 3:13 to pull to within 17, 52-35, with 11:59 to go. That would be the closest Medgar Evers would get, though, as the Cardinals would respond with a 13-2 run to go up 28 points (65-37) and would never look back. York would go up by as many as 29, before winning the contest by 26. (79-53).

York College was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, knocking down 32 of its 77 shots for the evening (41.6 percent), while Medgar Evers converted on just 28.9 percent of its attempts (22-76). The Cardinals held a slim 48-45 edge on the glass, while also swiping nine steals compared to two for the Cougars. York took care of the basketball well, committing just four turnovers, while Medgar Evers had just 14.

Medgar Evers will now have four days off before returning to the court on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the Bearcats of Baruch College to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
