Bearcats shoot blistering 58.5 percent from the floor, overwhelm Cougars in CUNYAC tilt

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team suffered a loss to Baruch College on Wednesday evening, falling to the Bearcats in a CUNYAC contest by a score of 123-69. The conference clash took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 5-18 (1-11 CUNYAC). Baruch improved to 18-5 with the win (10-2 CUNYAC).

With the defeat, Medgar Evers was eliminated from contention for the 2022-2023 CUNYAC Men's Basketball Tournament. 

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Joshua Jean Pierre scored a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Dimitri Weeks connected on six of his 14 shot attempts to finish with 12 points, three boards, and three dimes, and Jacob Green and Michael Perex scored 11 points apiece. Mousa Sinera, who was honored before the game for becoming the second player in program history to collect 1,000 rebounds for his career, snatched 11 boards while scoring seven points.

Baruch had six players in double figures, including Devin Nicholson, as the sharpshooter connected on nine of his 12 attempts from the floor, including six of eight from downtown, to finish with a game-high 24 points. He also added two steals, as well. Dylan Minnick was perfect shooting the basketball, as he drilled all seven of his shot attempts, and all four of his freebees, to finalize his evening with 18 points and four assists. Emil Purisic narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 16 points while snatching nine rebounds and dishing a game-high six asssits, and Gerard Nicholson contributed 12 points, five dimes, and four rebounds. Finally, it was Sean Donnellan and Michael Gannon scoring 10 points apiece.

The Bearcats utterly dominated the CUNYAC clash, racing out to commanding leads of 7-0 and 12-1. Baruch put some serious distance between itself and Medgar Evers late in the first half, as, with the Bearcats leading 45-24, they finished the session on a 12-4 run to take a 57-28 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Baruch connected on 63.6 percent of its shot attempts in the final 20 minutes (28-44), while also missed just one free throw (7-8). The Bearcats outscored the Cougars 66-41 over the final period of play, going on to win the game by 54.

For the evening, the Bearcats converted on 48 of their 82 attempts from the floor (58.5 percent), while Medgar Evers earned just a 36.4 percent conversion rate (28-77). Baruch held a healthy 53-35 edge on the glass, while also piling 33 assists compared to 22 for the Cougars. The Bearcats won the turnover battle, committing just 11 miscues, while Medgar Evers had just 16, and the teams had nine steals apiece.

Medgar Evers will play its final road game of the 2022-2023 campaign on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Midtown, Manhattan to take on the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in another CUNYAC clash. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
