Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars battle back from 2-0 to earn tie against CUNYAC foe York

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team and CUNYAC foe York College played to a 2-2 tie last night in what proved to be a thrilling match. With the tie, the Cougars are now 0-2-1 on the 2023 campaign, while the Cardinals are now 0-1-1.

The Cougars earned a golden opportunity in the early stages of the contest, as Jamar Anderson earned a promising look, but an incredible save by Cardinals netminder Ahmed Algendy kept the match scoreless.

Later, at 18:50, the hosts lit up the scoreboard when Marvin Mondesir took advantage of Carlos Veliz' lead pass to bury the ball into the net. That gave York College a 1-0 edge. Less than a minute later, at 19:45, the Cardinals catapulted to a 2-0 advantage when Mondesir sliced home another pass from Veliz.

Medgar Evers sliced York's advantage in half in the 24th minute when Taye Simon took advantage of a Cardinal turnover, collecting the ball at the center of the park and blasting a shot over the hands of Algendy. That brought the Cougars to within 2-1, and that would prove to be the final goal of the opening session. Each team registered eight shots in the first 45 minutes of action.

Jamar Anderson drew the Cougars even at 55:09, gathering a pass from first-year standout Mike Eliacin before slashing the ball home. Medgar Evers had a tremendous opportunity to take the lead less than five minutes later, but Algendy stopped a shot apiece from Anderson and Eliacin.

For the remainder of the CUNYAC confrontation, both squads had their changes, but neither team was able to breakthrough for a potential game-winning goal, as time expired, resulting in a 2-2 tie.

The Cougars held an 18-14 edge in the shots category, including a 10-5 edge in shots on target. York College earned five corner kick opportunities compared to four for the visitors. In goal, Algendy registered a match-high eight saves.

Medgar Evers will now have six days off before returning to the pitch on Saturday, September 16, as the Cougars will travel to Patchogue, NY to battle St. Joseph's University (LI). Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
