Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles' barrage of goals proves insurmountable for Cougars

The Cougars' men's soccer team is still searching for its first victory on the 2023 campaign, as Medgar Evers was dominated today by the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's University (Long Island) by a score of 11-0. The match took place at Danzi Stadium in Patchogue, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers is now 0-3-1 on the season, while the Golden Eagles improved to 3-3.

For St. Joseph's University of Long Island, the Golden Eagles not only snapped their three-match losing streak, but today also served as the second time this season that they've defeated a CUNYAC institution by 11 goals or more. The Golden Eagles also beat York College by a score of 12-0 back on September 3.

The Golden Eagles were led by Sebastiano Bartolotta, as he scored a match-high two goals on three total shots.  Antonino Ruopoli, Sonny Farrell and Connor Owenburg each totaled one goal and one assist. Also, Nick Pensavalle, Vincent Mariani, Lucas Pelaez, James Dacos, Chris Ventimilla, and Brandon Flaherty all finished with a goal apiece in the victory.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring column early with the first goal coming in the first two minutes of action as Pelaez slashed home a ball, courtesy of Sean Gordon and Kenneth Castillo. In the tenth minute, Dacos capitalized on a penalty kick, and just a minute later, Bartolotta netted his first goal of the match to increase the host's advantage to 3-0. As the first session was winding down, Owenburg and Flaherty found the back of the net in the last five minutes of the stanza. St. Joseph's University (Long Island) held a commanding 6-0 edge at halftime.

The scoring barrage continued for the Golden Eagles in the second session, as St. Joseph's University (Long Island) added five more goals to account for the 11-0 final score.

In what will be a short turnaround, the Cougars will return to action on Monday afternoon, as Medgar Evers will travel to Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field in Jersey City, NJ to battle New Jersey City University in non-conference action. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
