Saint Elizabeth University notches four goals in each half to defeat Cougars, 8-1

Box Score The Medgar Evers men's soccer team is still searching for its first victory of the season, as the Cougars were defeated yesterday by the Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University by a score of 8-1. The match took place at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-4-1 on the 2023 campaign, while the Eagles match their program record for consecutive wins at five. Saint Elizabeth is now 5-1-1 on the year.

After 24 scoreless minutes, the high-powered offensive attack of the Eagles was on full display, as Eddy Castro opened the scoring a goal, re-directing a pass from Sebastian Londono into the net at 24:01 to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage. 2:06 later, Bryan Cervantes received a pass from Alejandro Lopez and slashed home a bicycle shot in front of the net. That made it 2-0 Saint Elizabeth University. 31 seconds later, Castro notched his second goal of the game (26:38, from Ethan Mosquera) to give the visitors a commanding three-goal edge.

Saint Elizabeth University scored its fourth and final goal of the opening session at 31:21, when Afrim Amoah-Mensah headed in Luke Hughen's pass to make it 4-0. Medgar Evers was able to score an unassisted goal at 38:33, when newcomer Saibo Ceesay sliced home a ball to pull the hosts within three at 4-1. That would cap the scoring for the first half.

In the second session, the Eagles went on another scoring barrage, netting three goals in a span of 80 seconds to make it 7-1. Carlos Saldana (from Marvin Miranda) accounted for a goal at 61:56, and that was followed by consecutive tallies from Cody Ilkner (62:25, from Mosquera, and 63:16, from Londono). The Eagles eighth and final goal was of the unassisted variety, and came courtest of David Aboussleman.

Justin Couto received the victory in net for Saint Elizabeth University, as he allowed one goal and made one stop. The Eagles' defense was stellar all afternoon, allowing the Cougars just the two aforementioned shots on goal.

Medgar Evers will return to action Monday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Purchase, NY to battle the Panthers of SUNY Purchase. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
