Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's volleyball hosts CUNYAC multi-match, falls to John Jay and York

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team began its 2023 season on Saturday, dropping a pair of CUNYAC matches to John Jay College (0-25, 2-25, 3-25) and York College (5-25, 21-25, 12-25). The matches took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY.

John Jay College also defeated York, upping the Bloodhounds' mark on the season to 4-1 (2-0 CUNYAC). The Cardinals, with the 1-1 output on the afternoon, are now 1-2 (1-1 CUNYAC).

In the Cougars' first match of the day, the Bloodhounds dominated, only allowing the Cougars five points for the three sets. Joviana Bennett led all players with six kills, and the visiting Bloodhounds used a whopping 37 service aces in their victory. Medgar Evers veteran Quiara Brye Bey registered four digs in a losing effort.

Against York College, the Cougars were able to muster more offense. Medgar Evers held a 5-3 lead in the opening set, before the Cardinals ran off five consecutive points, which included four service aces from standout Shamonie Miller. At that juncture of the set, York led 8-5. Later, the Cardinals held an 18-15 edge, before running off seven consecutive points to close out the set.

Things looked promising for the Cougars in the second set, as Medgar raced out to an early 10-5 advantage. Brye Bey registered two kills during that spurt, while Raine Williams added two service aces, and newcomer Mariame Gueye also earned an ace. An 8-0 run by York ensued, as the Cardinals jumped ahead by a score of 13-10.

Medgar Evers battled back, earning three straight points to tie the set at 13-all. First year player Jennifer Metra registered two aces during that aforementioned run. The Cardinals' Madison Plaza served four-straight points, including a pair of aces, during York's 5-0 run, as the Cardinals went back ahead 18-13. Later, up 21-17, Alicia Gumbs served back-to-back aces and Miller delivered a pair of kills to close out the set, as the Cardinals took a commanding 2-0 advantage in sets.

York College dominated the third set, going up 13-4, and later notching nine of the match's final 12 points to nail down a three-set sweep.

Miller's stellar performance led the Cardinals, as she tallied a match-high 11 kills, hitting .471 in the process (11-3-17). Her 10 service aces and eight digs also led all players. Nadaysia Nivar contributed four kills, six aces, and four digs, and Cherub Autar compiled a match-best 17 assists.

Brye Bey registered a team-high five kills for the Cougars, while also adding a pair of digs. Williams' seven digs, four assists, and three service aces were all team-bests.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Medgar will travel to the Peter Jay Sharp Center to take on the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
