Cougars drop non-conference match to Mount Saint Vincent in Riverdale

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match on Tuesday evening, falling to the Dolphins of the College of Mount Saint Vincent by scores of 4-25, 9-25, and 11-25. The match took place at the Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, NY. With the loss, the Cougars dipped to 0-3 on the 2023 campaign, while the Dolphins improved to 1-2.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veterans Raine Williams and Britonya Lloyd, as well as newcomer Mariame Gueye, all tied for the team-high of two kills apiece. Williams also tied for the match-high of five digs while contributing two assists. Junior Quiara Brye Bey registered five digs in a losing effort.

Broderick Melanieann led the way for the victorious Dolphins, as her seven kills were a match-high. She hit .875 for the evening (7-0-8), while also adding a pair of service aces. Elizabeth Flores tallied six kills (6-0-9, .667) to go along with five digs and two service aces, and Jocelyn Castro and Adelina Elezaj finalized their evenings with four kills apiece. Finally, it was Nicole Sullivan posting match-highs of 20 assists and nine service aces.

Mount Saint Vincent dominated from the jump in this non-conference affair, scoring the opening nine points of the evening. The Dolphins continued to pour it on in the opening set, as the Cougars were only able to register four points and two kills. Mount Saint Vincent secured the first set by a commanding margin of 25-4.

The Dolphins raced out to a 14-0 advantage in the second set, with Sullivan recording eight of her match-high nine aces during the run.  A modest 7-6 run by the Cougars brought Medgar to within 13 at 20-7, but the hosts responded by notching four of the next six points to take the set, 25-9, to go up 2-0 in sets.

In the third set, Medgar Evers stayed relatively close for a bit, as a slew of attack errors by the Dolphins kept things respectable. Mount Saint Vincent led just 13-7, but four consecutive points by the hosts catapulted the Dolphins' edge to 17-7. Mount Saint Vincent never looked back from there, eventually closing out the visiting Cougars, 25-11 to win the set and the match.

Mount Saint Vincent finished with a hitting percentage of .358 for the evening (28-9-53), while the Cougars hit -.139 (3-8-36). The Dolphins also scored just a fraction under 39 percent (38.6) of their points off of service aces, totaling a whopping 29 for the night.

Medgar Evers will have Wednesday off before returning to the Cougars Cave for a non-league clash with the Devils of FDU-Florham. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
