Women's volleyball defeated by Sarah Lawrence and Centenary University

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College and the Cyclones of Centenary University. The matches took place at Centenary University's John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center in Hackettstown, NJ. With the loss, the Cougars are now 0-6 on the year. The Gryphons are now 3-3, while the host school, Centenary, is 5-3.

In the Cougars' loss to Sarah Lawrence, Medgar Evers veteran Quiara Brye Bey finished with a kill and a team-high five digs. Britonya Lloyd finished with four digs, and Jennifer Metra and Sarah Vallon finished with three digs apiece.

Athena Kazos' of Sarah Lawrence registered five kills, a match high, in the Gryphons' victory. She also tied for the team-high of five service aces, and she also finished with four digs. Carolyn Kelly contributed three kills and five service aces, and Ava Devarona Castro's eight assists led all players. Finally, it was Maddy Heavens collecting a match-high seven digs.

After Sarah Lawrence won the first set convincingly (25-5), the Cougars kept things interesting in the second, trailing just 13-11. The Gryphons turned up the voltage from there though, scoring 12 of the set's final 14 points to snatch a commanding 2-0 lead in sets. Sarah Lawrence then dominated set three to finish the match.

The Gryphons used 26 service aces to pace themselves to a big win, with four different players registering at least four.
In Medgar Evers' loss to Centenary, Brye Bey recorded a team-high three kills to go along with a pair of digs, and Lloyd added two kills, as well.

Centenary's Cameron Fulcher and Poppy Skjonnemand registered six kills apiece, tying for the match-high in that category. Skjonnemand also added three digs. Kim Stallworth and Alyssa Bizzarro finished with six and five service aces, respectively, and Vanessa Pagano's nine assists led all players.

The Cyclones not only hit .378 for the match (21-4-45), they also finished with a whopping 24 service aces.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will play host to CUNYAC foe Baruch College. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 7:00pm.
