Despite valiant effort, Cougars suffer sweep at Valley Forge University

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match last night, falling to the Patriots of Valley Forge University by scores of 13-25, 15-25, and 19-25. The match took place at the Pit in Phoenixville, PA. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 0-8 on the 2023 campaign, while the Patriots registered their first victory, improving to 1-7 on the year.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Britonya Lloyd posted match-highs of five digs and three service aces. She also tied for the team-high of two kills. Quiara Brye Bey contributed four digs, two kills, and a pair of assists, and Jennifer Metra finalized her evening with two kills and two digs.

Telia Robinson paced Valley Forge University, as her four kills were a match-high. She also collected seven service aces to go along with three assists. Rhena Lauver and Caitlyn Fisher notched three kills apiece, with Fisher also adding six service aces. Marie English's eight service aces led all players, and she also contributed two kills. Finally, it was Unique Castilho dishing six assists, a match high.

Medgar Evers held a brief 2-0 lead in the opening set, thanks to a bad set by Castilho, and an attack error by Robinson. Valley Forge would respond by scoring nine of the set's next 12 points to catapult ahead by a score of 9-5. The Patriots then used a 6-0 run to balloon its lead to 15-5. That spurt featured a pair of aces by Fisher, and two kills from Lauver. The Patriots would go up by as many as 13 points in the set, before winning it by 12 (25-13).

The Cougars kept things relatively close in the second set, trailing just 13-8, before Valley Forge used a 7-1 run to snatch a commanding 20-9 edge. The Patriots notched four aces during that run, including two apiece by Castilho and English.

Medgar Evers did score three straight points in an attempt to battle back, thanks to a service error by English, a service ace by Adacia Scotland, and a kill by Sarah Vallon. That made it 20-12. The Cougars later trailed 23-15, before consecutive attack errors by Lloyd clinched the second set for Valley Forge.

Things looked promising for the Cougars in the third set, as Medgar Evers raced out to an 11-5 edge. Lloyd, Mariame Gueye, and Sherly Garcia each tallied a kill during that opening run, and Lloyd also notched a pair of service aces. The Patriots responded with four straight points, including three service aces by Fisher, to make it 11-9.

Later, with the set tied 15-all, the Patriots snatched the lead for good, scoring four straight points, thanks to two aces by Ruby Hall, a kill by Robinson, and an attack error by Vallon. Valley Forge later looked poised to close things out, leading 24-16, but the Cougars stayed in it by registering three straight points to pull to within five points at 24-19. A Lloyd service error then ended the set and the match.

For the match, Valley Forge University hit .071 (14-10-56), while the Cougars earned a hitting percentage of .028 (9-8-36). Valley Forge notched a whopping 33 service aces compared to five for the Cougars, and Medgar Evers held a 19-16 edge in the digs category.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will make the short trip to Brooklyn College to battle the Bulldogs in a CUNYAC match. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
