Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Panthers' offensive attack overwhelms Cougars as Medgar drops non-conference contest

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team suffered a non-conference defeat Monday evening, losing to the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by a lopsided score of 10-1. The match took place in Purchase, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars are now 0-5-1 on the 2023 campaign, while the hosts improved to 5-2 on the season.

In a match in which the Panthers held a commanding 40-7 edge in shots, Purchase scored just five minutes in (4:41) when Leo Conte collected a through ball from Ermin Mackic, split the defense, faked left, and drilled a ball into the net to make it 1-0 hosts. Just less than 14 minutes later, at 18:39, Mackic scored a goal of his own, cashing in on a penalty shot to make it 2-0 Panthers.

Later, SUNY Purchase would score four goals in a span of 10:06 to put some serious distance between itself and the Cougars. That aforementioned string of goals started at 22:14 when Oliver Broun scored off of a deflection off a corner kick to make it 3-0. Mackic scored his second goal of the match at 24:45 (from Conte) to give the Panthers a 4-0 edge. Mackic then solidified a hat trick, scoring again at 27:30 (from Noah Siega) to five SUNY Purchase its fifth goal. Bart Maroney later blashed home a shot from 18 yards out (from Liam George at 32:20) to put the Panthers ahead 6-0.

Medgar Evers would get on the board with 51 seconds remaining in the opening session, as veteran Dadley Dorfeuille headed in a ball (from Bernado Guerrier) off a free kick to bring the Cougars to within five at 6-1. That would be the final goal scored by either side in the first stanza.

In the second half, Purchase's potent offensive attack didn't wane. Matthew Cuartas scored an unassisted goal, his first of the match, at 61:29. He followed it up with another tally (from Mackic) at 66:16 to increase the Panthers' advantage to seven goals at 8-1.

Later, at 79:21, Oliver Broun notched a goal (from George) to make it 9-1. Mackic capped his incredible night with a fourth goal, netting it at 85:45 to put the Panthers up 10-1. That would be the final goal of the evening.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, making the short trip to Brooklyn College to take on the Bulldogs in a CUNYAC match. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
